Kinda defeats the purpose of posting it... Maybe it'll go back in stock...

tuan121, you're a lucky one, after reading your post on how easy it was for you to get it for $69, I decided to give it a try hoping they wouldn't do a price check and the late night effect might make them lazy but they asked for a price "CHECK", the person must have been a night person.

The "Sold Out" indicator seems kind of funny to me. Doesn't Buy.Com usually just list an item as "Back-Ordered" when it's not in stock. Possibly, it will remain listed as "Sold Out" until they have access to these drives. Remember, the 8 MB cache Maxtor drives just hit the retail shelves a few days ago. Personally, I'd bookmark the page and check it daily if anyone is even remotely interested in this drive. Also, you might want to save a copy of the page to see if Buy.Com would honor their price in the event they jack the price up when they start selling it. 😉

If we could have done this, it would have been a great deal, but since we can't, why bother, except maybe to try a price match?

I got their catalog (Buy Magazine) which has this deal last Friday and checked their website right away. It was sold out. Next, I called them. I was told that the magazine is mailed from the west coast, and by the time it reached me here in MI, the product was already sold out.

Not only did he say they were out, but when I asked about them getting more, was told they have already taken more orders than they have drives, and are scrambling to round up enough drives from elsewhere.

Btw, the real deal was that if you called in the order from their catalog, there was an additional $10 off of a $100 purchase, bring the real price down to $101.95.

And they were offering free shipping also.

Any good csr will deny a price match to this, as they already seem to know that buy.com is oos. At least that is my experience so far.🙁

Pricewatch doesn't have anything close to this price for the 160GB drive.. It was probably one of those "bait and switch" deals. Advertise a very low price to get people to your site, when the three drives you had are sold out, hope they buy a different one from you.

If I could get them at this price, I would be looking at some serious RAID action. This would give me enough storage for a lot of HDTV on my HD PVR.

O.K. guys, I am giving this a shot. I ordered the drive from Googlegear for $276.00 with 1.00 UPS 2 day shipping. I have already called AMEX BVG and verified that it does not matter that it is out of stock. Manufacturers part numbers are the same. If it works....160 gb Ultra series $276.00 - 110.95= $165.00 BVG check. $111.95 is not bad for 160 gigabytes of 8 meg cache.........ummmmm...storage!!!!!!

Will post results.

I can't go wrong, my Optima Platinum (reverified that it still has BVG) also includes the guaranteed return. If no BVG, I will use that to avoid Googlegear restocking fee!

BVG claim approved. Maxtor 160 gb Ultra (8 meg cache) for $110.95!!!! No tax and $1.00 shipping from Googlegear!!!!!

Also I can't seem to find the Wd 160 gig 8 mb buffer drive on the site, all I see is the 2 mb version, so how did u find the drive there and how u get them to price match....

Its a Maxtor 160gig drive, not WD

so all i have to do is place the order with googlegear.com
then call AmEx Blue and tell them to go2 buy.com and see the price??
and they will pricematch it??

googlegear

THERE IS NO DEAL HERE!!

1. BVG no longer applies to the Blue card. It is only available on several of the higher-end cards that carry an annual fee. If you don't have one of those cards, stop reading now.

2. There is no guarantee that, even if you have the right card, Amex is going to PM something out of stock. I had a BVG rejected in the past on those grounds, and their terms explicitly say it must be in stock. So, you're counting on having someone review your application who isn't following their own rules.

Also: Unless they've changed the process, they ALWAYS "approve" everythign instantly. You don't find out if you're getting rejected until you mail/fax them all the goods.

Well, I faxed everthing in on 11/27. This was the final approval...check has already been placed in the mail. I posted the completion of this deal as a courtesy to several other folks who are waiting for my results before doing this deal for themselves. I have Amex Optima Platinum.

MontyBurns is absolutely correct that the Blue card no longer carries the BVG. Do not even attempt this if you do not have an Optima Platinum or Business Gold or one of the other more obscure cards which still carry BVG.

For those folks who have been corresponding with me, make sure that the Buy.com ad will still be valid after you order from Googlegear. I faxed the web page with a date clearly marked as well as the model number clearly visible. The drive from Googlegear is as bare as possible..just the drive...not even a mounting kit or UPC or any software of any kind was with the drive. I took 5 business days to receive it. 1.5 days for processing then it actually took 3 days for shipping (I know it says UPS 2 day, go figure).

On the plus side..If you do have Optima Platinum...you also have guaranteed return. So if this deal had not worked out, I would have filed a return claim with Amex and shipped the drive to them for full reimbursement.

Read from top of thread please.

Awesome, gonna try it now.

It's weird, the link that you showed is legit, but if you do a search on PriceGrabber and go through the link to buy.com from there, it has the version that ~ $280.

But I'll try anyway because AMEX has been pretty lenient with me with regards to BVG. Thanks. I have 4 wd1200jb's in raid 0+1 (with the help of some pm's and rebates)... maybe 4 of these would be better. 😛
