1600x1200@75Hz vs. 1600x1200@85, Is there really a difference?

I'm looking to go with a new 19 inch monitor. I've read a lot of threads here and the 900NF and G400 seem to be what people mostly recommend. I like to run my desktop at 16x12, should I opt for a monitor that'll do 85Hz or is 75Hz sufficient?

Thoughts and recommendations would be greatly appreciated by those that have these or other quality 19" monitors. Thanks 🙂

Me personally, I like running at the highest refresh rate that the card/monitor support. I tend to end up with eyestrain/headaches with lower refresh rates, (I can tell the difference between 85 and 75 clearly). I run at 85 Hz on my 17" (yeah I know it's 19, but still... 🙂 ) and well it what suits me. Basically it's all your opinion, usually, the higher the refresh the better, well I choose to think so 😉

most people can't tell the difference between 75hz and 85hz, however i personally can. and in the long run w/ how much i work on computers i don't tolerate anything below 85, if my monitor didn't do 1600x1200@85hz then i'd run 1280x1024@85hz.

After a long day of work, even 100Hz offers a slight improvement. My Sony G500 is currently maxed at 1600x1200x32 @95Hz 🙂

PS: This is not to say that you can't tell the difference between 100 and 120Hz. I can! There isn't any eyestrain difference, but if you drag windows around or pan the camera in Quake3 really rapidly, movement will look smoother. This is due to lack of VSYNC and true motion blurring. That's why FPS gamers often play at 120+Hz. I play at 160Hz! 🙂

Hmmm 85Hz minimum. No compromises. I can tell the difference between 75Hz and 85Hz...but between 85Hz and anything higher is more difficult to detect...Leo must have bionicly augmented eyeballs to notice 120 being better than 100. Either that or his damn icon gives him superfeminine powers.

Sounds like I should go Sony G400? I can't seem to find if the Samsung 900NF will do 85 at 16x12 🙁

It was my previous monitor, great choice! 1600x1200 @87Hz.

Hehe 😉

My Samsung 900NF does 90Hz at 1600x1200 and that is noticeably better than 85Hz. I prefer to run at 1280x1024 at 100Hz instead.

Both of them can do 16x12 @ 85Hz, so you dont have to worry about that. Personally I would choose Samsung, but if you can find a good deal for the Sony, its not a bad choice either.

I think there is a good noticeably difference between the two. Yes the 900NF supports 85hz at 16x12, 90hz actually like Burn said. I also like the 100hz at 1280x1024 though! 🙂

i can't tell as much at lower res... but eventually it hits me on the eyestrain. i'm thinkin 85hz may be too little now.. then again, it could be i'm tired... hehe.. but at 10x7.. running 75hrz is a max of one hour... i tried to live w/ it cause i wanted a higher res.. 11x something.. but it got too bad.

Looks like I can get the 900NF for about $75 less than the G400. Is it worth the extra $75 for the Sony?

Come on, they're not identical. I must remain skeptical when it comes to Sony's trademark features like contrast and color saturation.

Yeah, there is a big difference especially after you have been setting in front of it for a while, or go from one to the other, in which case you will see the monitor flicker which really hurts my eyes.

sd, I emailed a Samsung rep and he said that the 900NF officially does 16x12 at 85hz, w while its highest offical resolution is 1800x1440 at 75hz (i think, im at school right now so im not so sure). I know my 900NF does 2058xwhatever @ 60hz. So yes you can definately run it at 85hz.

Burn, how are you running it at 90hz? Is there a program? Windows only gives my 85hz and 100hz as options.

Thanks for all the info guys, I think I'm gonna save a few bucks and go with the 900NF 🙂

i've got a kds av195tf and hey i run it at 16x12 x 85hz, because that is the max. i cant really tell the difference but might as well. Its amazing that sony sells the e400 for $140 or so more than this monitor and that has their cheaper 16x12x75 tube, instead of the 16x12x85 tube in the even more expensive g400 (around $170 more than the kds).

"most people can't tell the difference between 75hz and 85hz"

Wuat? You must be kiddin' right? Nothing under 85Hz for me.
