160,000mi Service - '01 Civic

Set up an appointment to get my the 160k mi service done on my Civic. Talking to the service department it sounds like they'll drain the car of all fluids, fill it back up, and then do a full inspection. For that they want $570. I don't have the tools or time to do it myself, but that sounds pretty steep. The car is running great and I'm hoping to hold onto it well into the 200k range.

Does anyone have any stories about a similar service with their vehicles?
 
Seems steep, but do you have a list of the fluids they plan on doing?

Oil change = $30
Trans fluid = ~$100
Brake Fluid = ~$100
Coolant?

I'd more interested in the other non-fluid items. Your timing belt should have been done around 100k, was that done? If you're planning on keeping the car until 200k, you'll be due for that again soon.

Also spark plugs and air filters are small money, but also often overlooked.

Trans fluid $21
Brake fluid $8
Coolant $30
Spark plugs $25
Air filter $15
$120 total and that's including new plugs and a filter which they aren't doing for you. No thanks.
 
For that money, that better not be just for a drain and fill. Full flush is in order.
 
My son has as 02 Civic that is at 146,000 miles. He just had the timing belt and water pump replaced (for the first time) at 140,000 miles. He was lucky! Anyway, he's just doing the standard maintenance and replacing the wear and tear items himself and his car runs great.
 
Coolant flush and fill
Power steering flush and fill
Oil and filter
Transmission or gearbox+clutch hydraulic fluid
Brake fluid
Toss in labor

Are they going to toss in air conditioning to?

sure you could do it cheaper yourself, but if they are truely replacing all fluids, it doesn't sound out of this world expensive.

couple hundred in parts, and 3-4 hrs labor. It's shop and they need to make some money. they aren't going to get rich on this job at 500-600 bucks
 
Every fluid I would think:

Engine oil and filter -$30
Coolant - $60
Power Steering - $30
Brakes - $100 ?
AC - $60 ?
Transmission - $50

Total: $300ish

Plus a thorough inspection, which probably takes 2 hours, it doesn't seem that out of line considering the dealer labor rates at $90-110/hr.

I bet you could save $400-$450 doing it yourself, but that's your call. You're paying for the convenience of not doing it yourself and not having to dispose of all of the old fluids from your car.

Couple hundred in parts? I just did a run down of what it'd cost and even threw in a air filter and plugs and it came to $120. Maybe im just a poor guy but $450 to basically turn a few bolts loose to drain the fluids seems like an awful lot. If he needed some complicated engine or electrical work that's one thing. But this is a basic loosen bolt, drain fluid, refill type situation. A pair of ramps and a $50 tool set from Lowes would fix him right up. No way in hell would I pay someone the better part of $1000 to drain fluids.

I had 110 into atf doing a trans service alone. His quote is not unreasonable. Not everyone has the resources to do all the work themself

I could. But then again, I've only done basic work on a car/bike before.

Just get a good itemized list of what exactly is being done. while I think a service at 570 bucks isn't unreasonable, it is still a lot of money and if they skip on a few key items, it may not be worth it. Also at 160, I would think a timing belt might be in order, depending on when it was last done (figuring they would be done around 80k miles)

they probably don't even change the fluids just top it off

the difficulty is finding a good mom and pop shop that knows what they're doing and won't scam you
 
When was the last time each of these items was done?
Perhaps you don't really need a "160K service"
Has the timing belt ever been done? I would worry about that a lot more than anything else if not.
 
I bought my old Civic is with 147k on it... all I had ever done was tires and oil changes, not one other thing and I sold it with 267k on it... I still see it driving around, that car was indestructible.
