16-year-old charged with murder in wreck during street racing

i don't think he needed to be charged with murder for him to learn his lesson. the death alone would have been enough, imo.

i disagree with the charge too... maybe if he had ran over somebody, or crashed into some innocent person's car. but the person who was killed was a willing (afaik) passenger. her poor judgement played a role in it too. wonder if she was wearing a seatbelt (says she was thrown out).

btw, why would you race with passengers? wouldn't that just add weight? i dunno, i don't street race so i don't know these things...
 
Maybe this kid learned the lesson already, but it should also work as a deterrent against others. I don't pity people doing crap like that.

Maybe he learned a lesson but all those other kids out there who think they're Mario Andretti haven't. They're making an example of him.
 
where is mention of the car he was racing....was he even racing? or just going 100.? and putting yourself on the line is one thing, but never endanger the lives of others. way un-cool.

Yes .. way uncool ... but I'm guilty of it, luckily I never killed anyone, just scared the pants off of some of them.
Drunk drivers are worse IMO, you never know when one of them can take you out .. a speeding car you can see and try to avoid, but a drunk you can't (well, sometimes you can)
 
yeah, where does it say they were street racing? If they were, where was the other racer, and if that racer just left after seeing his competitor flip over numerous times then that guy should be charged with hit and run or something (i know that wouldn't stick but that's jacked up to just leave). It's dumbf*cks like this that give teenagers a bad name when it comes to driving. If it wasn't for morons like this my insurance rate would be cut in half and my parents would have no thoughts about helping me finance a car, since I know, and my parents know that i'm a much better driver then my two older sisters and my parents. But regardless of that fact I still pay a premium in insurance which I will never use.

So if a drunk driver kills someone we should give him moral support cause of the shock he may have gotten from it? You kill someone, you get punished. As simple as that. If you don't punish this behavior others won't learn from it. Not that they will now, but allowing it is basically allowing killing people with a car, claiming you were their friend and did it accidently, and that you feel 'soooo bad!'...

That was going to be my comment. Racing with one other in the car, maybe; three? No way.

The kid was being 16: he had three girls in his new car and he probably felt omnipotent.

I didn't have a car that would go 100mph w/o falling apart when I was 16, but I know plenty of others who went faster than that in their new cars...

she wasn't wearing her seatbelt. no one else in the car was thrown from it, and they all lived and walked away. now, the kid shouldn't have been driving that fast, but likely the girl wouldn't be dead if she'd used the available safety aparatus in the vehicle. if you run over and kill someone who is drunk and runs out into the road, you're not responsible. he has some responsibility but its definitely not murder since she could have put the belt on and probably lived.

More the reason to demand that your passengers wear seatbelts. My friends get annoyed when I demand them to wear their seatbelt, but the cost of their death with my being involved would be more than I could bear.

And everyone complains about how insurance premiums are for young'ns.

I did some stupid stuff at 16, but nothing that comes close to this. Perhaps its a 'bama thing.

I know it was street racing because I know several people that were at Lakeshore at the time of the accident.
 
Hmmm... interesting case.

Personally, I believe this guy was Uberstupid, but as conservative as I am I can't agree with a murder charge.

Murder implies intent to kill. Certainly, there was no intent here. Homicide, however, would probably stick.
