It's utterly disgraceful that there are any homeless veterans at all. They risked their lives and their health serving and protecting us, and we can't even be bothered to provide housing for them?

Well, that's not completely true. There is a program called HUD/VASH that provides permanent housing, but the Republicans forced a $25 million budget cut earlier this year. That's right... a measly $25 million, a sliver of the federal budget, just *had* to be cut.

This isn't the 60s and 70s, Americans don't spit on veterans anymore, but we still don't really care about them. If we did we'd do everything we could to help them in return to what they've done for us, including providing housing, medical care, psychological care, etc.
 
It's hard to say Americans don't spend enough on veterans. There are an absurd amount of programs for veterans. The real issue is that it's hard to take care of mentally ill people. They don't take advantage of assistance because, well, they're mentally ill.

Just trying to point out that you posting a thread trying to act concerned about veterans is like me posting a thread acting concerned about termites in Africa.

Anyone who severed this country in the military who wasn't dishonorably discharged is a veteran. The veterans who died in combat are still on patrol.

I am concerned with veterans... You have absolutely no basis for saying otherwise. Who the hell are you anyway? I've never seen you post here until today. Troll? I don't understand why you take issue with clearly distinguishing between Memorial Day and Veterans Day.

The VA authorizes benefits to anyone NOT dishonoraby discharged that has served on active duty more than a set period of time ?90 days?. That is the determination of a veteran or one that died while on active duty in the performance of their duty.
 
The problem with these statistics is, like, what percentage of people joined the military because they didn't were almost totally incapable of holding any other job? Don't have supportive families? Have other personal problems? Problems interacting with other people?

Should serving in the military entitle someone to a lifetime of complete care-giving?

What percentage of the people serving in the military end up homeless? What percentage of the people serving in the military would have ended up homeless even if they didn't join the military? What percentage of the people serving in the military did not end up homeless, but would have if they didn't join the military?

Nobody gives me anything just for living. I perform the job I have, helping fellow Americans do their jobs, day in & day out. Nobody is setting me up with a free house.

You can appreciate and respect veterans, but you can also recognize that giving people free stuff is not always respectful, not always the right thing to do.

All classes of people have a percentage that makes shitty life choices even veterans.
Some are mentally ill.
Some just want to be left alone.
Some screwed themselves over.
There are many reasons veterans are homeless... What is your point. There are already hundreds of programs to assist veterans with their life after service. I use them as a 20+ year veteran myself, they could too. They are not abandoned they only need to seek out what they need just like everyone else.

Yep, that's coming from someone that spent 10 years in the military. I say it's utterly disgusting that there is any homeless PERIOD.

Vet or Not ... They have every right like anyone else. People are people let's deal with the problem as a nation and society. Oh well, lets keep ignoring the problem while we pass out 100K+ bonuses.
