16 GB SO-DIMM? Will it happen with DDR3?

I am just wondering? Are 8 GB chips as high as we will see with 204-pin SO-DIMMS? Or will we see 16 GB very soon? To wait until DDR4 seems a long ways off.

Maybe, but this is not a large demand for such large amounts of memory for laptops, so I doubt it.

Quad core processors such as those in the Mac Mini server and 15" and 17" MacBook Pros can handle 32 GB of RAM. Only Clevo laptops (and a few other brands) have four RAM slots. MBPs and Minis have 2.

I don't think there's any change. I would assume that if there were a demand for a 16GB laptop stick, there would also be a demand for a 16GB desktop stick, and I haven't seen any indication that 16GB desktop sticks are being mass manufactured for regular consumers yet.

There is no point, an i3 sandy bridge processor has a limit of 16gb total ram, and you can reach the limit with 2x 8gb, 16gb would break the limit.

Some i7 laptops could have 4 memory slots to reach their limit of 32gb, 4x 8gb

Especially with prices so low I would like to see more SFF desktop mobos with SO slots and using the space for greater functionality.

Where did you hear that i3 SB CPUs could only address 16GB? That seems strange, considering the number of motherboards for 1155 that contain four DDR3 slots. 4x8=32GB. I would certainly hope that Intel isn't castrating the CPUs that badly, that they cannot use all of the memory that a mobo supports.

This thread is about "SO-DIMM" (memory for laptops) so I think we are also talking about laptop processors,

i3 SB for laptops are limited to 16gb total, like this one:

Well, you didn't say "mobile Sandy Bridge i3 processors". I thought that you were talking about the entire family of i3 CPUs.

Yes, you might be right, however I was only thinking of mobile processors and didn't consider desktop processors at all.

Well, just in case you install more then 16GB RAM, be aware that Windows 7 Home Premium has a hard limit of 16GB RAM built in. You need the Professional edition to handle more...

Another stupid MS marketing decision...

16gb of non-ecc ram is stupid anyways. really should be looking at ecc at 8gb or more. bit flips are nasty.

imac's have 4 dimm slots so 8x4gb are cheaper
