16-Foot-Python Killed In Florida; Deer Found In Stomach
Graphic pics at bottom

Officials in south Florida were in for a surprise last week when they cut open the belly of a 16-foot Burmese python they had captured and killed in the Everglades.

Inside the reptile they found a 76-pound, fully intact deer, the Sun-Sentinel reports.

According to the South Florida Water Management District, the snake, which was a female, weighed 215.4 pounds with the deer, and 139.1 pounds without it. The girth of the snake's stomach, stretched to accommodate the carcass, measured a whopping 44.1-inches. From head to tail, the reptile measured 15.65 feet.

i never understood why people buy Burmese pythons (or reticulated pythons and Green anacondas). The fuckers grow HUGE.

I like snakes. i have a few Ball pythons, a childrens python and kingsnakes. NOTHING that is going to grow big enough to eat me.

I go to a reptile swap to get frozen mice/rats. They also have snakes to buy. it always shocks me when someone is buying these snakes that get fucking huge.

the US Game and Fish dept should get the ball rolling and ban these types of invasive animals from being brought in and sold in the US

Yeah they are doing a bounty down there to bring their numbers down. They are really disruptive to the Everglades ecosystem. They offer some free training on how to track and kill them and then you get a reward for bringing them in. How much I don't know.

they are trying. trouble is they are trying to ban all python and constrictor's.

There are plenty of snakes that are not deadly. ball pythons, childrens pythons, kingsnakes, corn snakes etc. they are all small and make good pets.

isnt the state of FL offering a bounty on pythons?

I think so.

It's not just the pet trade, though that is a huge problem.

Many of these fuckers are introduced into southern florida riding storm surges in hurricanes.

How does it stretch like that?

I think constrictors have a high percentage of cartilage in the bones that make up their length--rather than ribs that form complete circles of bone, each ring is comprised of sectons of bone connected with very stretchy cartilage.

Also, they can completely unhinge the jaws, and much of the skull and jaw is also cartilage.

A lot of snakes will kill themselves, though, trying to swallow something too big for them.

Introduced from where exactly? The Burmese Python and Reticulated Python live in Asia, the Rock Python in Africa, the Amethyst Python in Australia and the anaconda in South America. Those are some pretty epic storm surges. No snakes that live in the Caribbean are causing a problem in Florida and none are large enough to do so even if they did somehow magically manage to surf a hurricane north. The problem in the Everglades cannot plausibly be explained by anything other than the pet trade.

That would have been a good thing to do 15+ years ago when all the biologists down there were sounding the alarm.

Isin't snakes and other big creatures like that normal in Florida? Don't know why they killed it. I would be more worried about a python that long that is thin. At least that one already ate. :p
