I was using a 16 feet USB active extension cable to my printer for awhile without any problems.
Than, suddenly, the Windows XP Pro stopped recognizing it. It din not matter which port I would plug it in - one in the front PC panel, a back one or a usb hub.
Thinking - the cable is dead, I even posted a negative opinion on the Newegg's website regarding the cable's quick death.
But when later I tried using it on the other TWO computers I found the cable to be working just fine.
...So, it seems to be an issue with MY PC's motherboard!?
All of the other USB devices, including 1 foot extension cables continue to work fine.

Any suggestions on how to fix the problem?

Thank you in advance.

Igor K.

That is odd. If other USB devices run OK, then your mobo seems OK.

What kind of printer? Can it be run by ethernet from your router? That may be a better option in the long run. I run both a laser and inkjet that way -installed as network printers more than 16 feet away. The ink spitter can be Cat 5 or wireless. Both work. Cable is faster.

Thank you Mr. Corky-G.
I knew my Canon Pixma MP970 was not wireless, but I totally missed the Ethernet port.
I will need to play with it a bit, since the router is located in a different room, to which my PC is connected.
I wonder whether I can split the connection into two by using ANOTHER router in my study room? Does it sound confusing?

I know you can connect a switch to a router. Not sure about a second router - but a switch - yes! I have it that way.

Yes Mr C-G!
It works. 15 minutes and all the hardware I already had laying around the house and it all runs well.
Thank you for your suggestion.
I was on a brink of reinstalling the whole OS, which would have taken me weeks to complete. (I hate to do that)

Sincerely,

Igor K.
