No, I do, I just hate it when random family members to whom I'm not close just invite themselves.

sounds like youre being a jerk. how does them coming hurt you again? you dont want family to be happy and share in your joy? its probably an oppurtunity for them to see family that they havent seen in a while since many will be there to see your selfish ass graduate.

It's a bit more complicated than that, there's some family history behind it that I'm not about to go into on here, perhaps that colors my perception of it.

At least now, this won't happen to you:

<announcer calls your name>

<sound of crickets>

<someone yelling 'you suck!'>

How is he being a jerk? I hate it when people feel they should invite themselves just because others are going.

If you weren't invited, take a fscking hint!

lol Well, considering I'm part of a graduating class of 5,000, that probably won't happen.

Of course, considering I probably wrote up 500 or so of those 5,000, maybe it will. :D

its not a date. hes graduating, which is normally a family affair.

he says theres some conflict in the past, so he may have a good reason for not wanting them there other than he doesnt particularly care for them.

since hes leaving college and hitting the real world, now would be a good time to learn some honesty and email his aunt back, tell her how he feels, and ask why they want to come. then decide if he doesnt want them there. they may be coming to try and make amends for all he knows, and he may miss an oppurtunity.

I don't think he's being a jerk.
This occasion isn't for his aunt's, it's for the graduates. If they didn't get invitations, they should have gotten the hint. But now they ask him in order to put him in an uncomfortable position so that he looks like the bad guy.

I sympathize. My college had limited tickets available, and it would have severely ticked me off if I had to distribute those to people who didn't care for me instead of people (unrelated) who did. Fortunately, not so many people were eager to see me graduate.

true. in light of him saying theres some family history, which i can only interpret as conflict, hes not being a jerk. but if he didnt care enought to invite them in the first place, then he should have no problem saying no and being the "bad" guy.

The tough part is that for most of my life it's been between my parents/aunts/etc. I've managed to remain apart from it up until now, so that's why it's a PITA. Finally having to draw my own line in the sand, so to speak, in my family.

ahhh. i went through the same crap. one thing to remember is, as always, there are two sides to every story. my mother used to "fued" with my dads side of the family. now that im older, i can see where my mother had flaws and it was just as much her fault as the other side of the familys.

that doesnt mean that your aunts are right and your parents were wrong. just that theyre all human and make mistakes. but if you dont want to deal with it, dont. and dont feel bad about it either. its your life and no one elses.

good luck.
