You'll fry it or your PSU. I killed my old PSU by pluging in a cdrom drive while the computer was on.
 
my friend corrupted my hdd by unplugging the ide ribbon while it was on, not sure about the power though.
 
I've done it before. The little "new hardware found" window comes up just like if you had installed an external hard drive.
