I bought an Acer 2012 laptop approximately 7 months ago, right before a hot deal thread was posted on this forum. ~$1400: Pentium M 1.5Ghz, 512mb ram, 60 GB hard drive, Radeon 9700, 15.4" screen - the works at the price point. Actually the day after I ordered the price dropped to $1200 but Newegg refused to give me back the difference, but I kept the laptop as it seemed liked a good deal anyway.
Now: Three weeks ago one of the hinges broke. Originally I wanted just to return the laptop to Newegg but they said they won't accept it and that I have to deal with the manufacturer. I promptly got an RMA number and shipped it back. They got the laptop a couple days after and called me to say that they discovered it was due to me using excessive force. Actually, they said they will fix the faulty hinge but the plastic around the hinge the snapped would be replaced only if I paid $199 as they deemed that I broke the plastic, somehow.
3 support guys hung up on me - basically told me give me a credit card or I'll have to hang up this phone. I proceeded to ask for their supervisor, they said they are their own supervisors. Next day I called corporate offices. Corporate connected me to some head at the RMA department, and after a bit of phone tag they reluctantly agreed to fix it.
This process took two weeks, and the laptop was finally shipped back to me on Thursday, and I get it back today.
I opened the box and it looked okay, the hinge appeared to be fixed so I was happy. I then tried to turn it on, albeit I took the hard drive out before I sent it to them, so I was booting without a hard drive and was hoping for just a bios screen. Well nothing appeared on the monitor
. I thought maybe it?s not turning on as it needs a hard drive, so I went and plugged the hard drive in. Again no go, but when I plug in a cable to a monitor it works perfectly. I'm guessing they broke the screen or didn?t connect it when they messed with the hinges. On top of that one of the rubber legs that was on the laptop is now missing.
Needless to say: I'm pissed. I spent two weeks dealing with these jackasses all day trying to get an explanation as to how I would break the plastic and be liable for a $199 charge. After they finally gave up I end up with a laptop and a dead screen. Newegg again won't take the laptop from me as they say I need to deal with the manuf. so I'm forced to deal with those @ssholes again tomorrow
Lesson learned: Don't rely on Newegg to take back a laptop, even though they would have done something like this earlier, and never buy an Acer laptop unless you love dealing with idiotic RMA tech responses.
Cliff notes:
1) Make sure you trust the manufacturer if you buy from Newegg, as they wont take it back.
2) Don't buy from Acer unless you love dealing with idiots.
3) I'm royally pissed - read above.
