Only one city? Somewhere near Cancun, I forgot where my brother went. A nice place is Chichen Itza where you can see the Mayan ruins.

First of all, Cancun and TJ shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence. TJ is a pit and should be avoided at all costs.

If you want cheap I guess you could drive down to Rosarito or Ensenada. I haven't been down there in about 10 years but they were by far much nicer than TJ-which isn't saying much.

Cancun is a tourist spot but it is beautiful there. I'd recommend going to some of the ancient Mayan ruins near there if you decide to go to Cancun. Food is expensive though.

You could also go to Puerto Vallarta or Cabo San Lucas or Acapulco although I haven't been to any of those places.

Just be aware that you are in a foreign country and they would think nothing of throwing you in jail for the most minor of infractions. You have no rights down there.

Edit-Don't drink the water.

It depends on your taste, and most folks look for excitement & familiarity therefore Cabo/Puerto Vallarta/Acapulco are a few destinations that people go for the beach and girls, Cancun (cost a bit more money & is nicer), or Veracruz (bigger city with more activies, such as Spanish dance). Tijuana is just a border town that dedicate to American tourists (sex, shop & alcohol). Oaxaca is a nice place to visit in the southern highland if you are looking for culture & pottery. Merida is a land lock city, however it still is a nice place to visit with loads ruins in the surounding area, and is a few hours from Cancun. Chetumal, is a less develop town that border with Belize, and IMHO is nicer than Cancun, because the water & coral reef is incredible (Still in the Yucatan like Cancun & Merida). Chiapas border with Guatemal, also is a nice place to visit if you don't mind some unfriendly natives. And, IMHO the pretiest Mexican city is Villahermosa, locate on a river with greenery & beautiful parks that are dotted with white cranes & flamingos.

Best is get the Lonely Planet guilde & make your decission base upon your reading. Also, post here & I'm sure there are a few backpackers at ATOT can help you if you have more questions.

If you're a noob to Mexico: Cancun with side trip to Chichen Itza pyramids & Tulum ruins. There's also cool clubs that rival the ones in Ibiza, Spain--nuff said!

2nd time out to Mexico: Mayan Riviera like Playa Del Carmen (better than Cancun), Cozumel, etc
