$1500 for moving cost??? WTH??

Ok Im moving from the bay area to LA, I used movers.com to get an estimate and I chose this particular company called all star mover

they charge $450 for the first 1000 pounds, and $.45 cent per pound after that....

my apartment is a small 1 bedroom, and I thought the max that I can spend is $1000....

HOWEVER, their actual estimate AFTER they loaded my stuff to the truck is $1500 (total of 2625 pounds) !!! what the hell?? they charged me $273 for packing material! WTF is that

so I chose to weigh my stuff instead, now im praying that my stuff is less than 2625 pounds or Im screwed...

There was a Dateline about movers who give you an estimate, pack and weigh your stuff, then they jack up the actual cost of the move once it's too late for you to do anything.

WTH?? if they do that I will sue their ass off!!

Sounds like you got fairly well fvcked. We went with north american van lines on our last moving job (actually two ago since I've used crappy uhaul trucks the last two times and paid for it in beer and pizza) and they came in UNDER the quote - and the quote was already quite frankly ridiculously low.

If they do it? You're not making sense - have they already loaded this or not...?

they already loaded the stuff, but still honoring the quote, so if they jack up the price I will sue them!

It sounds like they already loaded his stuff.

On that Dateline, they said that lots of people have been screwed like that and that there is little regulation. Some of those families (hopefully just extreme cases) had their furniture and everything tied up for months before they got their stuff back.

Well if you dont pay them they will put your stuff in a storage shed and charge you $50.00 a day for storage until they get your money. After 30 days they will sell your stuff and then get a default judjment against you and you will not have your stuff and you will still owe them a bunch of money.

Bleep

Move it yourself. http://www.penske.com

main problem is: driving the truck down to LA... damn gonna take a looonng time!
and also I need to fly back to drive my car...

load and unload too.... lots of hassle...

Uh how is it different than driving a car back to LA? It'll take 8-10 hours tops if you don't drive the thing into the ground.
You can get a car trailer for $300 or so.

It does sound like it, but we really won't know until he weighs all his stuff.

man I need to move soon..I would be thrilled if it only costed me $1500 to move. I have to move from Denver to KC.

moving is expensive

moving yourself is cheaper, but still costly

just sell everything and start over when you get there

hey!! you got the job?? 🙂

or you just coming anyway?

My Dad had this problem a while back, and I asked him if the movers showed up with a full tank of gas or not.

Moving trucks, depending on size, will hold 100+ gallons of gas or more. If they show up low on gas, load your stuff, fill up with gas and then weigh the truck you are paying for their gas.

(~6.5lbs)(100gal) = 650lbs extra

And the packing fees are a well known scam.
