I can speak for:
0833 1 COLLEGE STATION TX 410 Harvey Road

I went down there on Saturday afternoon and they said they had one in stock and I pulled out my checkbook. Then the manager went to get it and said "oh we dont have that in stock, it was just an inventory problem" and that it was apparently a common thing for their computer inventory to show different from their actual inventory in the back. He said they havent had flat panel monitors for months. He said the same was probably the case for the stores in the Austin area (nearest other city)

j00, yes, it's really a hot deal. The picture isn't the greatest, but you don't pay a fortune either. Fle-bay has it at over $500 easily.

Here are some tweaks...I was able to get a REALLY sharp picture from this Proview LCD through some minor adjustments:

First download and install the Proview monitor driver:

http://www.proview.net/proviewpnp.exe

Change the monitor in Display Properties to "Proview 510/560/580 15-inch LCD". Set the refresh rate to 60Hz (others are just too blurry) and 1024x768 resolution.

Use this test pattern to first set the BRIGHTNESS and IMAGE LOCK:

http://www.zdnet.com/pcmag/features/hardware/1517/montest/1024bb.htm

Adjust IMAGE LOCK so that all three patterns are stable and lines are sharp. This test pattern is really good, especially if you use IE 5.0+ at fullscreen (F11). Then beginning with BRIGHTNESS in the center, reduce the level until the pattern begins to break up. Leave it a few steps up to keep the patterns sharp and stable (I discovered this anamoly -- that the BRIGHTNESS control seems to affect the freq/phase -- tonight while trying to sharpen the image).

Then go to here to adjust the CONTRAST:

http://www.zdnet.com/pcmag/features/hardware/1517/montest/1024aa.htm

The brightest pattern on the right should have the squares distinct. Set it as low as possible, but still keeping the rightmost square most bright. The left should fade evenly into black (BRIGHTNESS already set above).

That should do it. If necessary, you can tweak the gamma/color temperature through your video card driver and/or photo color management program (Adobe Photoshop has a nice color management wizard for this).

Now this picture is stable, bright and sharp. In the beginning I was disappointed at how fuzzy the LCD was even at the standard 1024x768 resolution. Best $340 (had to buy a power supply) I have ever spent!

As of Monday, Melrose Park, IL has a display model left. Just the monitor and speakers. Calling ahead for it should be no problem; none of the employees seem interested in it. They were going to send it back to the manufacturer. I returned it before I got a chance to buy a power supply and turn it on, so I don't know if it works, but an employee told me it used to be hooked up to a computer, so it should function okay. I'm having a new monitor shipped to me from another location.

For the people asking for store phone numbers, just go to http://www.officemax.com and click on Store Locator. Then click on the city closest to your location, and it pulls up a list of stores.

Still tweaking:

I notice that the backlighting shines bright especially with a deep black background. Very apparent when booting up the computer...the DOS/BIOS black background is not very black. The BRIGHTNESS and CONTRAST controls have no effect on this. I know LCDs have difficulty with a true black background, but other LCDs seem to handle black better.

Since the LCD panel works as a polarizing filter, is there any adjustment to slightly tweak the panel itself to improve the black level? Any techs who work with LCD displays know if this is possible? Or are all PT-500s like this?

Thanks...

I know hope springs eternal but any stores that still list 1 are probably sold out....

They didn't even use the sku for my display model. They rang it up as a misc merchandise 299.00 ...

Man.... I hope they can track those missing monitors...

NEo, and anyone who gives a rats axx. I went to 3 stores that NEOV provided ot me in a email.

Store one said it was display and they couldn't find it.

Store two said they were mistaken

Store three insisted that we were discussing a 15 inch monitor.(I don't come to this forum to buy a 15 incher for $299)

Logic would allow me to conclude that the 3 local OM store employee's are either absolute inept idiots or shady characters that will encourage me to forever find any deal at OM at Price match at Best Buy or wherever so they don't get my cash.

Thank you

Sam

Did you bother reading the original thread before visiting the OM stores in question?

The employees at store #3 were indeed correct when they informed you about the 15" screen size. However, as this is a 15" TFT LCD screen, the price is phenomenal. (The prices are usually 600 & up.)

Enjoy your CRT Sam -- It just ensures more for the rest of us.

Neo, I have to butt-into this and state that I don't think the original comment was directed to you- it was about the BS at the locals stores that guy went to.

I am very happy that you posted this and was not mislead in any way.

Please stick around and keep helping us out!! Although I am STILL in limbo about getting one, it was a sweet deal :) :)

NeoV, You DID NOT mislead anyone. If it's not for you, I wouldn't have gotten into this great deal. I hope stingygrrl is right and that SAM didn't really direct the comment to you.

Guys,

HELP NEEDED with my PT-500!! I just bought this baby via a DELIVERY order from OMAX, (yup there are some really sweet employees out there) and its in mint condition...no burnt pixels, nothing.

I installed the correct drivers from the Proview site, chose the 15" PT-510 setup and everything went fine. BUT, and here's the thing: the resolution is STUCK at 640x480. The slider on my 'display properties-->settings' tab moves from 640x480 to 800x600 and then to 1020x768 as it should. However it is unable to switch to this mode (the screen goes black and then windows restores my original desktop settings). Note that I can switch successfully between 256/16bit/24bit color settings. Its just the damn resolution.

What should I do? The interesting part is that my old monitor (17" CRT) works fine..I can move upto 1600x1284 with that.

Is this a problem with my PT-500 or the video card? Should I reinstall the video card drivers?? ANY HELP would be more than welcome..

Thanks so much!

Hmmm....I don't know...check the video cable? It sounds like the "plug and play" part is not being very cooperative.

You may wish to reinstall your video drivers, or check for an update. Also make sure that under display properties for your monitor, that the "plug & play" part is checked (it should be already).

You could use a straight "Plug and Play" monitor. I doubt that the bonified Proview drivers would add anything.
