Just picked one up for $1299 after rebate. The ad starts in UT a day early. Also got a $100 dinner certificate and the following items free after rebate:

Epson Stylus CX 3810 Printer Scanner Copier $89
Zyxrel 802.11g Wireless Router $49
CA Internet Security Suite $69
TaxCut Deluxe and State $29
Professor Teaches Windows XP $19

The ad boasts the extras being a $359 value.

I know a number of people that can use the XP tutorial!

If you actually read the above link, this shows there are quite a number of spindle speeds available.

Most high-end DTRs are quite customizable.

Anyone know CompUSA's policy on this? I bought it Wednesday; about half a week ago.

All they would have to do is return it and resell it to get me the rebates, right?

Exactly what I thought when I saw this. Even on sale you can get a better deal from Dell.

SOunds like that would work, but it depends on the MOD at the time. If you ask nicely, (honestly, that has always worked for me) then they would do it...

I remmeber reading their policy and it said that "all opened notebooks will be refunded via gift card" so in effect you can return it and repurchase it to get the rebate, but you'll be stuck with a ~$55 gift card. At least you'll get the rebate back which will be nice..

THe last deal from Dell was a 9400 (17"). With the ram and video card upgrade and 100gb sata drive, bluetooth and the works, it came out to nearly $2000 after coupon. NO more dells for me, sticking to something else other than the norm.. imho..

The $1300 question is how does this compare to the Thinkpad T60? Any reviews yet?

OK. Then show us a similarly equipped Dell for $1299...

Exactly. First of all, most Acer's > most Dell's in terms of quality. Second of all, higher clock speed isn't exactly what I would purchase a laptop on; there are a LOT of other more important features I would buy a laptop on.

Um, it won't. Thinkpads are designed for a VERY VERY different market than a budget Acer laptop. Build quality, features, service & support, everything will be much better on a T60. But a comparable T60 will run you over $2000...

My review model should be here next week, I'll have a full review up in about 2-3 weeks.

You are right. $3000 is over $2000. I would like to have the Thinkpad, but I would rather get similar performance and lower quality for less than half the price.

After checking further, you can get an IBM T60P(soon) which is quite a bit better for $3199 with 2 GB Ram and I think there is a $150 rebate. A lot more money, but a lot more computer.

CompUSA did the return/repurchase for me without any trouble.

We even picked up the FAR printer/scanner to give as a gift to my in-laws.

still a weak screen

why can't there be a notebook that doesn't weight a ton, has a good resolution screen (1050 vertical pixels), and has a decent graphics card?

Agreed.

That is the only failing I can see with this machine, and the only thing keeping my current credit card balance intact. WSXGA+ would make this already hot deal absolutely smoking.

If you do NOT need a higher resolution screen, this is an excellent choice.

Although a bit pricey, the MacBook Pro is shipping soon. I think I'm going to wait for Intel's Merom.

until someone has hacked a version of windows to install with EFI rather than BIOS the macbook doesn't hold that much interest for me.

I assume with your specifications there ElFenix that you want a good price. Price withstanding, the T60 14-15" SXGA+'s are kickass. Under 5lbs for the 14", good res (1400x1050), top notch build quality, and you can get an X1400 in it (4 pipes, replacement for X600).

the x1400 isn't exactly a barn burner... (it's just an x1300, right? anyone know the clocks of these things?)

maybe i'm just asking the impossible. i really don't feel like carrying around a dell 9400, not that those even fit on the desk at school. unfortunately the inspiron 630m doesn't have the screen or the graphics. the 6000 might have the screen, but the x300 isn't much better than integrated grapics, imho. and it's a little big.

honestly, i'm not sure there is anything on the market as attractive a package as the 600m was 3 years ago, with (at the time) decent graphics, great screen, light weight, and true road-warrior options (i love dual batteries, for example)

The X1400 is about the best you'll find in a sub-15.4" laptop. The X1600 is MUCH better, but you won't see many manufacturers putting a higher TDP, more expensive GPU in a laptop designed for portability since the majority of their customers don't care...

You're probly looking for something along the lines of X700/X1600/NV 6600/NV 7400-7600 (dunno specs on the NV ones). Every X700 I've ever seen is 15.4" only. Toshiba has a 14" notebook with the GF 6600 (8 pixel pipes), that's about the most portable GPU performance you can get. The new NV mobile GPU's aren't very common yet. However the Toshiba (M4?) comes to around $2K configured with SXGA+ screen & GF Go 6600
