Here is what to do:

Put him in a box as others suggested and put him in the trunk of your car. Here it will be protected from the elements and prevent decomposition.

That is, if its cold enough in Charlotte NC.

Tomorrow take your girlfriend and find some place you would like to bury it. There is nothing wrong with burying a pet. You just want to give it some respect and not "toss it out" and there is nothing wrong with that.

I'd recommend doing this over just giving it up to the vet. I hate to say it but the vet will just "pitch" the cat. At least you can treat it how you want.

Guys, I'm not going to like bury him. But, I'm not going to toss him in a dumpster where he'll get crushed either. I'm in between the 2 extremes. I mainly just want to know where to take him to be disposed of "properly." The ashes aren't going to sit on our mantle, but I'm not tossing him in w/ pizza boxes and stuff.

I guess either the SPCA or the local pet cremator guy can take him tomorrow. I'm guessing it shouldn't cost more than $50...? It's going to be 17 degrees here tonight, so he'll be fine in the plastic bag/towell/old VCR box outside on our porch tonight. I'll deal w/ it tomorrow. Thanks for all the suggestions, and wobbuffet, I don't hate you.

In all seriousness - just go to a field and bury him At least you will know how he is treated - and it will be between you and him. You really never know how he will be treated by strangers that have no vested emotional interest in the body after you pay and leave.

We had to pay once to have a cat buried by the veterinary clinic (It was February and digging a hole was out of the question). At a wedding reception, I sat with a local vet... our conversation led to my discovery that they just bury them in large batches in a hole dug by a backhoe. No nice grave... just a mass grave. I've since realized that being buried in a landfill is no different that a mass grave.. except it's about $50 cheaper.

would the SPCA take him tomorrow? I can't come to grips with tossing him in the dumpster with last week's trash.

Okay, in all seriousness, stick it in a plastic trash bag and put it in the fridge or freezer. It won't contaminate anything.

except your MIND.

Geez, it's apparent that not many here grew up out in the country or on a farm. Animals are animals, you either eat them or use them for a purpose other than just to cuddle up on your lap.

I love dogs, but I only keep them as a first line of defense, an alarm system so to speak. When they die I feel bad for awhile but I couldn't care less where their bodies go. I have buried most, a couple I have tossed in a trash can and one I left for the vet to dispose of because he was euthanizing it anyway.

People care more for their damn animals than they do for their brothers and sisters of the human species.

Well, in some cases, the pets exhibit more affection, better companionship and certainly better manners than some of these "brothers and sisters of the human race" you are referring to.

But I know what you mean, in the general sense.

😉
