you can buy a conroe for about that price, and despite it being the cheapest conroe it will still smoke a 3800+ X2, and OC better as well. Why would anyone buy AM2 mobo is beyond me.

Would you please provide some type of reference? $146 for a Conroe? Where?

Oh god, Conroe again...

I'd prefer a 3500+ for $114. That extra $32 doesn't seem that appealing to me.

Yeah, that 'smoke' you speak of will be coming from your ears if you try to run onboard raid with Conroe though. I think you should take heed that 1) Intel has personally set up BOTH the AMD AND INTEL boxes in their comparisons. 2) That real world performance is different than test environment performance.

We'll see if Conroe really is the fighting champion it's claiming to be, but there's been some doubt cast around it as of late in regards to its raid performance.

This issue deals with RAID5 performance and Nfroce 590 on AM2 doesn't have GREAT RAID5 performance anyways.

You talk about Intel setting up comparison rigs. They did do this but their are over 20 reviews out there from review sites AND consumers that got Conroe early. All of the reviews show huge gains when even the lowest clocked Conroe is compared to AMD's top of the line FX62.

This is new technology and it's not even final or shipping yet. You should stop speculating and reading things that originated from THE INQUIRER aka rumour mill.

Please provide a link to a Conroe "for about that price" or to some sort of documentation showing "about that price". Next, what benchmark(s), reviews, comparisons, etc. are you using to conclude that the C2D (at about that price) will "smoke" a 3800+ X2?

I'm not trying to be an AMD fan boy; in fact I'm considering a C2D before the year is out. If there is a model that is around this price and it smokes a 3800+ X2, I'd like to see the numbers and more importantly (as this is a Hot Deals post) know where I can buy this CPU at this price point.

More on topic, it's cheaper at ZZF, $139 shipped.

I think Conroe will perform very well. I don't know if it'll be as good as the previews show (things rarely are as good in real world as in previews). However, Conroe will be scarce for a good couple of months after launch so the AM2's are still good buys, especially if the rumored price drop hits as planned. And I'm hoping it does so I can pick up a AMD X2 for my Socket 939 mobo.

ummm.....no. ***moron alert !!!!!!!! ****

Cheapest Conroe (E6300) will be $183 and all Conroe (aka Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Extreme) are dual cores.

*** end moron alert ***

Wondering where the moron got the info about $220 single core..........

To answer your question "will it (the price) get any better?" the simple and 100% historically accruate answer will be Yes, absolutely. Odds are the CPU you pay $150 for now will be about $50 in a year, if they still make it.

The real question is whether you actually need the computing power this CPU represents now, and if so, are you willing to pay the early adopter premium price for it.

One quick thing, didn't Intel make the 3rd party companies who were testing Conroe adhere to STRICT testing requirements? Thought I heard somethign about this...
