    Killer thread rez. :p

You should start a new thread, probably in the CPU or Distributed Computing Sub-Forums. For what it's worth, the AMD many-cores often loose out to the Intel fatter-cores, particurlarly if you're looking at 24/7 load. Although to be honest, I'm not aware of what the total platform performance/cost looks like in BOINC PPD terms when looking into 8+ thread systems.

You are better off using 7990s in a server based board with sufficient lanes. If assigning multiple tasks to each GPU it's best to liquid cool the cards as they will run quite hot. PPD will be through the ceiling and much cheaper than using CPU only systems.

It may be irrelevant due to the nature of your task, but still here goes, if you're topping out at 72 gigs anyway, todays SB-E platform can yield you a 64G total with cheaper non ECC ram (i know i know, it screams anti-scientific).
And if one of the confirmed bottlenecks are harddrive IO, why havent anyone replaced that raptor with an SSD, and if its linear reads/writes, maybe even a raid ssd setup.
All about eliminating the bottlenecks right?
