So I found the perfect resolution/LCD size. I've tried much larger 32" ones or others with a hella high res but I always go back to the good ol' 19" widescreen. Because of this, what video card could I max everything out and get away with?

I'm building a new machine soon and I'm sure a $130 HD 5770 would be overkill, right?

No, in fact a 5770 would kick ass at 1440x900... I say go for it, but find a cheaper 5770.

I cant imagine building a new pc just to game at 1440x900. a 32 inch sounds like a tv so how about actually looking at the 22-25 inch range 1920x1080/1200 monitors to see if there is something you like. and if you do stick to 1440x900 then a 5770 is not overkill at all if the rest of your system is up to date. for 130 bucks though you could buy a much faster gtx460.

I'm running a 250 GTS on my browsing pc, it kicks butt, I could imagine a 460GTX 768 or a 5770 can be much better.

Are you in the United States? If so, $130 is a lot to pay for a 5770. $100 or less sounds a lot better (don't forget to check 6770 also, same card but more choices/cheaper).

the 5770 really held their prices well because Nvidia never had good competition for them. At that price range also consider the GTX 460 (any version, 1GB (Non SE) being the best) or the 6850. I used to see a lot of GTX 460 deals but those are drying up and now I'm seeing a lot of 6850 deals.

Check out this one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.690415

$165. $10 off with promo code: XFX719
$30 MIR.

Free Dirt 3 when you register at XFX. Sell both games and you are at $100 or less.

And you do play videogames, right? You are not just buying a card to make Windows run better?

On board video will do it just fine if you are not going to be gaming. There are some better on board vid will allow some light gaming as well.

If you're using it for games, then no, a 5770 would not be overkill. In fact, it's pretty much the minimum requirement if you want to run everything at the highest visual settings.

My 5770 performs very well at 1680 x 1050 but I can't completely max some newer games, so I think it'd be pretty much perfect for your res. A 460 is a possible choice but only if you get a good price, otherwise you'd just be paying for more video card than you'll even use.

Your best performance/$$$ choice for that low of a resolution is gtx 460-768. I don't know where you can find one now unless you go used, however. More realistic is a 5770/6770 (exact same card just rebranded) for good performance or a gts 450 for average performance.

edit: be aware that gtx 460 se is actually slower than the 768, even though the se has more memory. gtx 460 cards are ranked as follows: gtx 460 1gb>gtx 460 768>gtx 460 se. The 460 se is about the same perfromance level as 5770/6770 though typically more expensive.

That all depends on what he can find for sale. Right now new GTX 460 768MB are NOT good deals.

Here is a 6770 that would be $85 after rebate and coupon (not 100% sure the coupon is still working: ICECREAM)

I would probably get a 6850 instead (you would have to sell the games or wait for a good deal without them).

I had trouble even finding a new gtx 460 768 for sale. It's too bad, they were $90 AR for about 6 months, now they're probably more than that used.
