&*@#%()@!!!!!!!

Goddamnitalltofvckinghell. I'm trying to install Gentoo. I've tried twice times. I get all the way through installing and configuring the boot loader, then rebooting. I'm following the how-to on gentoo.org, as well.

The first time, I tried a State1 tarball and let genkernel compile my kernel for me. I chose lilo and configured it exactly like the damn how-to states. When came time to reboot, all I got was a screen full of 99's. the number 99 over and over and over again where the bootloader should have kicked in and booted into linux. Including the bootstrapping and compiling and everything, took me about a day's worth of work to find out that this damn thing don't work.

I tried booting from the LiveCD and chrooting to the HDD, but it wouldn't let me chroot -couldn't find /bin/bash 😕 So I thought I'd just start from scratch.

The second time, I tried a Stage2 tarball since there was one specifically made for the P4. Great, now I don't have to frickin bootstrap everything. Yay me. Using the same how-to from gentoo.org, I chose grub which is much easier to configure. This time, the "passwd" command wasn't found so I couldn't set my root password. 😕 It worked before, now it doesn't. Then came time to reboot. I only spent, maybe, 5 hours on everything this time, but I got the same screen full of the number 99 over and over again when the bootloader should have kicked in and booted to the HDD.

WTF IS GOING ON!? :|

AAARRRRRRGG!!!!!

And, because I know all you fvcking asshats are going to yell wrong forum at me, this is a rant. Not a OS issue. Not a software issue. Not a technical support issue. So... if you came in here intending to bitch at me for it, buggar off.

Originally gave it a 6/10. You earn an extra point for the last part of the rant though. But then you lose that point for saying buggar off instead of fvck off.

6/10.

6 year olds know about the f word. Tell someone to buggar off and they look at you funny for a second trying to figure it out. If you're in the US anyhow.

That would hold water if you hadn't put the poll in asking the question of what to do. 😛 But it's shaping up to be a fantastic nef thread.

Oh, install XP btw. 😉 😀

That's what I'm thinking about trying instead.

It took me 45 minutes to install on my sparcstation 10, other than that, it installs pretty quickly. 😎

Well, the reason I wanted Gentoo is the whole emerge function. Is there something similar to that with OpenBSD?

There a Live-BSD distro, like Knoppix?

Portage (emerge) seems to be largely based on BSD ports. BSD ports started with FreeBSD and was ported (and majorly changed) to OpenBSD. Updating ports is a PITA for some people, but I rarely have issues with it. And that's being worked on ATM.

Try Debian then! Got it installed in 15 minutes, 20 minutes later I was up and running with X and everything else I needed.

apt-get is much better then emerge IMO.

FreeBSIE. It's based on FreeBSD.

Awesome. Think I'll roast a disc tonight and scare the sysadmin tomorrow. 😀
