14 year old with a cell phone

I finally allowed my 14 year old son to buy a cell phone. With his own money. heh

We decided he needed a pay-as-you-go type plan to help manage his money.

Safeway had a Virgin Moble Vox 8610 that he liked. Nice thing was it was on the wrong peg, so instead of $89.99 it was $29.99. And since they're locked in place, the store gave it to us for that price. :) I like Virgin's phones because they use the Sprint network, which I'm still a fan of (and my personal cell is Sprint). Between my personal cell on Sprint and my work Crackberry on Verizon, there's rarely a time I'm without coverage.

He was up all night playing with it. LOL!

We'll see how he handles his new responsibility. :)

Virgin is actually pretty good as far as pay as you go phones go, they're pretty user friendly and have much better rates than most other companies.

The 8610 is a great phone too.

If it's his own money, it can't hurt to let him get a cell phone. If he manages this well you should look into a family plan. Often you can get it for nearly the same cost as an individual plan.

Some folks would say it's ridiculous for a 14yo to have his own cell, but at the same time that person's 12yo has his/her own landline. Go figure. Anyhow, I'm not one of them. Nice idea with the lesson built into something your kid wants. GoodParenting++, IMO.

I didn't read the whole post, but the main gist of the thread is that your son is a virgin, kudos to him, not many are strong enough to wait

EDIT: ok, I re-read the post. your son has a virgin phone. I have no idea of his sexual proclivities

Yeah, I was uncomfortable with him having a phone for a while. But once I realized he will be solely responsible for it (with no bills or overages to get himself into trouble with), then I saw the potential.

His school's pretty cool about phones too. Never in class, but can keep them in the lockers. Pretty funny walking down the halls hearing phones ringing in the lockers. heh

Oh, and I'm sure he'll be calling girls. He's 14. I lost my virginity at 14. While I don't want that for him just yet, he *is* learning how to play...

I use Virgin for my own phone and have no problems with it at all. Costs me like $8/mo. I only use it for emergencies or when I need to talk to someone while in the car. Since most of my life is spent either at home or at work... and I have a phonein both those places... No need for a big fancy phone plan.
