what a load of crap, and they bought it,

'During the trial which began Monday, Zeigler took the stand in his own defense, claiming his intent was to fire a warning shot upward rather than to hurt the teen'

This is what I don't get about attempted murder charges. Why do you get less time, just because you suck at the crime?

Because we dole out punishments based both on intent and result. It's why involuntary manslaughter is punished less than murder (intent) and why attempted murder is punished less than murder (result). I guess the criminal justice system has more than one purpose: punishment for immorality, deterrence, making society safer, and retribution for harm caused.

These philosophical considerations aside, I would hope this one is worth at least 10 years in a cage.

Also, he should be charged with a hate crime. While I'm not quick to assume a racist motive, does anyone seriously think he wouldn't have shot at this kid had he been white? That conclusion requires us to assume he'd shoot at anyone who knocks on his door, in which case he would have been in jail a long time ago. That said, I don't know what applicable statutes they may have in Michigan.

It's plausible, if barely. It's still completely insane.

I can not understand how a "warning shot" is aimed at the person you are warning. The way this guy aimed the gun had a good chance at hitting the teen or missing him and hitting a neighbor's home. This guy was trying to shoot the teen.

Our prison systems have largely failed as a tool for reform, and it's expensive to use them for revenge to exact our pound of flesh. We can talk about how much time this racist, would-be killer deserves, but how long does he need to be locked up to protect society from him? That is the question we should be asking.

I hope he gets enough time to either die in prison, he's 53 now, or that he isn't released until all he can do is sit in a wheelchair and drool on himself. And if he does get released he has his 2A rights revoked for life.

Problem is that in Michigan many felons automatically get their firearm and ammunition rights restored after 3 years if they've fulfilled all conditions of their sentence. I'm not sure if what this guy got convinced of falls into that category of felonies or not, but I hope they take this all into sentencing consideration.

It's worse than that. The prison systems have become places that care most about creating repeat customers. It is only in the most cynical possible way that prisons in the U.S. can be called "correctional facilities". They can only be considered correctional if one accepts that a prisoner is not "correct" unless they will be back.

Didn't a black woman go to jail for firing a warning shot at her husband who threatened to kill her? Want to bet this won't go the same way

I'll be shocked if this guy suffers the same fate as Marissa and she had a reason. This creep should get 7-10 years

Jury failed on this one.

He should have been guilty on attempt murder. The aiming was too careful while the teen was fleeing before he fired the shot to not be considered an attempted murder.

This could have ended up like the Zimmerman case, good thing it was on camera and good thing his aim sucks. Must be a slap in the face to be caught by your own camera too! Hope he gets the book thrown at him.

But Zimmerman despite being an asshole was most likely innocent.
