Thank God for the footage or it would be the usual trope from the usual suspects in this forum. Any confrontation between a older white male and a younger black male, the black male is always the thug and should acquiesce to the will of massa.

This would have been a repeat of the Jordan Davis case. Go back and look at the posts in that thread.

I remember squaring off against the extremely racist Spidey and SpatiallyAware in that thread several times. Glad to see they've both been gone for a while now.

Not very smart of this guy... not sure the assault with intent to murder will stick, however...

Also pretty sure it going to be hard to show how a reasonable person would think that kid was breaking into his house...

"charged with assault with intent to murder and possession of a firearm"
"Zeigler was given a $50,000 bond was ordered to wear a GPS tether"

My blackness felt the need to point out that sure seems odd....

WTF, even if the owner felt threatened, the teen ran away and was 100 feet away presumably still running away out of the view of the camera when the owner fired the gun.

I support 2nd amendment, but this dude needs to lose all his guns and spend some time in jail.

Almost looked like a daily occurrence by the way he did it.

That is seriously fucked up, I don't see any way it isn't attempted murder. I'd think there'd be a lot of lesser crimes too like illegal discharge, etc.

This could have ended up like the Zimmerman case, good thing it was on camera and good thing his aim sucks. Must be a slap in the face to be caught by your own camera too! Hope he gets the book thrown at him.

Let's be frank, it would have ended up just like the Zimmerman case. Same cast of characters casting blame on the black person. "He had no business being there" "He was probably up to something" Find a questionable Facebook post and proclaim, "no big deal he was just a thug"

While access to more recording device has helped tell the real story one lesson from Rodney King having a recording doesn't always get you justice especially if you are black.

Bullshit, you are such a drama queen. Shot in the back 20-30 yards away? No burglary tools on him? This kid wasn't a thug looking for trouble. This idiot would have almost assuredly be charged and do time if he shot the kid in the circumstances we saw, even without video.

Totally indeterminate sentencing. 100% discretion of the judge. Here's the relevant Michigan statute:

750.83 Assault with intent to commit murder.

Sec. 83.

Assault with intent to commit murder—Any person who shall assault another with intent to commit the crime of murder, shall be guilty of a felony, punishable by imprisonment in the state prison for life or any number of years.

http://www.legislature.mi.gov/(S(qz...leg.aspx?page=GetObject&objectname=mcl-750-83

Let's hope "any number of years" means more than a couple in this case. The only difference between this and actual murder was the man's aim. Not a moral difference.

He walked up to the house because it had a neighborhood watch sign and he thought it would be safe.

The woman who answered basically shrieked , “Why are you trying to break into my house.” Her husband then came down with a gun and fired on the kid

The home owners had a Ring video camera doorbell. On it the woman could be heard saying “why did these people choose my house”.

While the police seem to be doing the right thing what do you want to bet there ends up being no punishment for either home owner.

Just a tip but if the first and only thing you think of when a black teen comes to your door in the day time is they are breaking in, you are a racist.

They kind of have to at this point. The story has gone national.

Even if he manages to escape with no prison time, which I kind of doubt, his name is tarnished, he can kiss whatever is left of his pension goodbye, because he's going to have to spend all of that, and maybe sell his house to pay the legal fees. Him and his silly bitch can go live in a cardboard box under the bridge.

And that doesn't even take into account the pending lawsuit from the kid's mother.

This is what I don't get about attempted murder charges. Why do you get less time, just because you suck at the crime?

Well, the major difference between this and the Zimmerman case is: The kid wasn't beating the shit out of the man at the time.

Seeing the video, it doesn't appear to be installed at the door as a Ring video doorbell would be.

Right so he should have just followed the kid around the neighborhood no where near his own house, provoked a confrontation (as being followed by a nosy dipshit will tend to do) THEN shot and kill him and claim self defense.

That would pretty much make the difference.

Meanwhile this dumb POS needs to be in a jail cell desperately. I hope the book is thrown at em.

The young man was afforded an opportunity to participate in someone's exercise of their 2nd amendment rights and people just complain.

Are watching the same video? Trying to shoot someone in the back who is 50 feet away and running from you should be attempted murder in anyone's book. White privilege.. geez.

Umm yeah, this happens to non blacks too.

I remember back in the day a white kid about 12 went to a black neighborhood (admittedly the ghetto) in my own town in the mid to late 90s to sell fundraising candy door to door. He was beaten into a coma for his sneakers, candy and money, and died a few days later in the hospital.

The black teens who beat him were sent to juvenile detention and that was about it.

Not to say asking for directions should lead to being shot at, but bad things happen to good people NO MATTER THE COLOR of the victim all day, every day.

Verdict in guilty of lesser charge

Verdict came quick and with the expected reduced charge of guilty of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder. Also convicted of possessing a firearm in the commission of a felony, which has a mandatory sentence of two years in prison.

He was able to convince them he didn't intend to hit him and that he only intended to fire a warning shot. Sentencing set for November 13th.
