$369.95 + Free Shipping. 2nd Day shipping is $5.49. You can get $30 off if you sign up for the Buy.com Visa card ($339.95 + Free Shipping). This is a great little 14" laptop for basic tasks. <Initial Impressions:

The build quality is good - it doesn't feel super cheap, but it's no Thinkpad either. Doesn't feel like it's going to fall apart (surprising at this price). It's definitely not a "thin & light" 14" laptop, but the weight is average at under 5.5 pounds. The first big surprise was the screen - it's FANTASTIC! It's glossy enough to bring out the colors, but not so reflective that it's a total mirror. Very very very good quality. I'm am EXTREMELY impressed, especially given the sub-$400 price.

The second big surprise was how quiet it is. There's one tiny fan on the rear right side and it's extremely quiet. The trackpad is small. I hate trackpads with a passion and use a notebook mouse, but still, I think they could have gone bigger on the trackpad. It's usable, though. I really like the curved keyboard. I use an ergonomic keyboard at home, so this was a welcome addition. I don't think that it's so curved that you'd have to learn how to type on it like a real split ergonomic keyboard, it's just a *bit* curved.

Speakers are about what you'd expect. Treble is fairly clear, absolutely zero bass. They don't even try, haha. There's plastic covering where you'd expect the webcam to be, since it's not an available option on this el-cheapo model. Which is fine, because I don't use webcams anyway...or know anyone who does, lol. There's no Bluetooth either, which I don't personally use either, but you can get a micro USB adapter if you really need it.

Vista is surprisingly responsive. They give you the crappy Home Basic version without the Media Center, which is probably fine for what this laptop is targeted towards. Personally I am putting Windows XP on it - it should FLY with XP. I am also upgrading it with a 320gb 7200rpm hard drive, so I get more space and better speed. If you plan on keeping Vista, it'd probably be worth slapping 4 gigs into.

Recommended Upgrades:

1. Hard Drive: Right off the bat, I'd say upgrade the hard drive. The existing 160gb 5400rpm is absolutely fine, but if you want to pimp it out a little, get yourself a 7200rpm hard drive. I got a WD Scorpio 320gb 7200rpm drive for $85 from Buy.com. There are a few 500gb drives on the market too - avoid the 7200rpm for now (only Seagate makes it) because it's been getting mixed reviews. The 500gb 5400rpm drives are pretty quick thanks to modern improvements, so they will feel faster than older 5400rpm hard drives. Newegg has it for $89 shipped:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16822136280

2. Memory: If you're going to "downgrade" to XP, then 2 gigs is great, but if you plan on sticking with Vista then you'll probably want 4 gigs of RAM since Vista is a memory hog. This plus a 7200rpm would really give Vista a nice boost on this laptop. Newegg has a 4 gig G.Skill kit for $45:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820231156

3. Bluetooth: Useful for cell phones, stereo headsets, and Bluetooth headsets. Newegg has a micro USB Bluetooth adapter for $19:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16833242001

4. Mouse: I hate trackpads. My favorite mouse is the Logitech VX Revolution, which is a wireless (RF) laser notebook. It's not cheap at $49, but it's awesome! The USB receiver tucks right inside the mouse for easy storage and the whole thing runs off a single AA battery. HIGHLY recommended:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16826104016

5. Webcam: If you really need a webcam, you can slap a USB model on it easily. I'll recommend Logitech because of past good experiences. Here's one for $50:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16826104068

6. Backup drive: If you need a backup drive, WD Passports are really nice to go with - they come in large capacities and run solely off USB power. Newegg has the 500gb 2.5" Passport for $115:

As far as other upgrades go: a padded bag is nice. I use an Ogio backpack, which has a padded zipper pocket in the back specifically for the laptop (that way I can carry my textbooks as well). Windows XP will perform nicely on this laptop, so that may be another good upgrade for you. A car power adapter would also be a good addition, just make sure it's at least 65 watts.

Well I just learned something very interesting - the d620 series is highly upgradable! There are a couple great threads over on the Notebook Review forums about modding it. And yes - you can even upgrade the processor! How about a dual-core 2.6ghz Athlon for $59 shipped?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...E16819103298&Tpk=5050e

Holy buckets! 😀 Here's thread thread:

http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=336445

Apparently you can even put in an AMD 5600 (dual-core 2.9ghz), but it starts getting toasty and drains the battery down to ~45 minutes, and you will probably need something more like a 120w PSU to power that beast.

Available internal upgrades:
1. CPU (2.6ghz dual-core for $59)
2. RAM (4GB for $45)
3. Wifi (802.11n if you want)
4. Hard Drive (500gb if you need capacity or 7200rpm if you need speed)

I'm curious to know if you could stuff one of those 802.11n+Bluetooth cards inside. Also an internal Bluray drive would be interesting, but the video card probably wouldn't support it. Overall an amazing deal...I'm debating upgrading the CPU, but I really will only be using it for Firefox and Office XP, so the stock chip is more than sufficient...

Upgrade Notes:

This is a 95% good design. All of the upgradable components are easily accessible, but it's got a crappy tab system for the baseplate. Basically, there is a fat L-shaped cover that goes across half of the bottom of the laptop. There are 5 screws (4 short & 1 long) inside the plastic plate, unscrew all those (#1 screwdriver I believe, very small). Near the back of the laptop (on the skinny part of the L) is a small valley, pop in a flathead screwdriver and start going around the edges. There are plastic tabs underneath and you kind of have to wedge the screwdriver between the laptop and the plastic plate and pop it forward and up. Once you get about 1/2 way done, you can just lift the whole plate off.

Now you are presented with the CPU, RAM, Wifi, and HDD. The HDD just slides out. Be careful because there are 2 tiny plastic washers on the 2 arms, remove those for now. The hard drive is secured to a tray with 2 screws. Just swap out the drives then slide the whole system back in - remember to carefully place those 2 plastic washers back on (they're tiny!), then clip the L-shaped plastic plate back onto the laptop. It's a bit difficult to get the plate back in, but it's thin plastic so just bend it on the sides and put both sides in (wide-ways) while pushing it towards the front, then clip the skinny top part in (of the L-shape). That's why I said 95%...the stupid plastic clip system is really lame 😛

Overall though very easy to mod!

Got the Windows XP drivers figured out! I'm sitting here typing on Windows XP Pro SP3 with everything working 🙂 Here's what you need:

-Audio
-Broadcom Wifi
-CPU
-Ethernet
-Keyboard
-SMBus
-Touchpad
-Video

The audio handles the speakers & I/O jacks on the front. The Wifi driver handles the 802.11b/g (works great with the Windows wifi tool, no separate utility needed). CPU is for the AMD CPU (this also showed up in Windows update under "Software"). Ethernet for the onboard Ethernet jack. The keyboard driver lets you use the Function keys, like volume control. SM BUS is required for the system. Technically you don't need the Touchpad driver, because it works out of the box for moving and tapping, but it does add scrolling which is nice. And finally the video driver. I got all of the drivers (for XP) from the eMachines support site, except for the Touchpad and Video (I got the latest versions from the manufacturer's website):

http://support.gateway.com/ema.../eMD620/eMD620nv.shtml

Here's the Synaptics touchpad driver:

http://www.synaptics.com/support/drivers

And the ATI X1200 integrated drivers: (XP Professional/Home > Integrated/Motherboard > Radeon Xpress 1200 > Go > Option 2 > Display Driver (not Gart or Control Center))

http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.HTML

Nice and quick with XP SP3! I think I'm going to skip the dual-core upgrade...it flies as-is right now 🙂

If anyone has one of these, what's the support like? I think it'd make a great, affordable laptop for a mobile lab in a .edu environment, but students also break the crap out of laptops.

Eh, no dual core, upgradable makes it over $400. $400 is a normal price these days-- 2-3GB RAM, Dual core, 160-250GB HDD, wireless.

they sometimes have it on special for $299.

When its $299 its a good deal.

I have one, but I just got it. I have had an eMachine in the past and they are pretty good about service - the Athlon 15" series I had were prone to broken hinges and eMachine would replace them.

This is a plastic laptop and is not high-quality plastic like a Thinkpad, so if they beat them up I'd say invest in Thinkpads, unless you just want throw-away stuff. These will last longer than other cheapo laptops because they're not "cheap", just not super heavy duty.

Wow that's pretty hot!

I just have to say, the screen is AMAZING. Looks much better than my last 13" white plastic Macbook - the screen is brighter and the viewing angles are slightly better. Also it's quieter than the Macbook was. I'm amazed that a sub-$400 laptop would have this good of a screen and run this quietly.

Also XP flies on this sucker

my bad, its $299 sometimes at bestbuy. or it has been before. not buy.com , same laptop though.

that is probably a good deal as well.

acer owns emachines and this has more or less the same specs except a bigger screen , but heavier. $20 less though.

Looks like that one is a 15.4" laptop, and even has a webcam! Regular keyboard, not curved. Great deal for $349!

Can I have your guys' opinion. does this seem like a good deal? I know it's refurb, but it's got 3gb ram and 250gb. New to this, so sorry if I'm not using the right forum. But you guys seem to know what you're talking about.

Hm. I wonder how that (and the OP's post) compare to the $400 Staples deal..

Those are both 15" laptops, while the one in my post is a 14" model. The Staples one looks like a real good deal though, that's a lot of laptop for the price!

I honestly would prefer the 14" laptop as its probably lighter. the screen is the same resolution anyway.

Honestly if you want oen of these new 2650e laptops wait till its $299. It will inevitably cost that again any week now.

Yep- but as hans just pointed out, the resolution is the same anyway..I'd be kinda partial to a smaller machine with the same resolution. If it were dual core with Vista Home Premium, I'd jump on it..don't really see a reason to go single core anymore, though.
