I was at the doctor's office today, and while I was waiting, I picked up a Reader's Digest. (It was either that or a year old SI. ) There was a letter to the editor from this woman who complained that her last letter was "edited" before it was published. The editors had taken out the statements the woman made condemning Harry Potter for promoting "satanism and witchcraft."

She was so upset because it is such a "huge issue." The woman then informed them that because of Harry Potter's popularity, the "Church of Satan" now boasts over 14,000,000 child members. She cited this article as the source: Harry Potter, the Devil's Messenger .

The editor's reply informed the woman that The Onion is a satirical newspaper. Some people need serious help.

(In this poor do-gooder's defense, I did see one of the editors of The Onion on Letterman a while back. Apparantly one of the major newspapers had cited The Onion as a source in a story about the pope or something like that... lol)

Reading is a good thing, I think. At least they are not reading books on how to kill people for fun and profit or Mein Kampf - then we might have problems.

Anyhow, video games have their benefits as well: critical thinking, hand/eye coordination. All of those can be beneficial, though there is evidence of anti-social behaviour from playing too many video games.

You're totally right Kru. I work in inner-city schools, and it's really awesome to see a reluctant reader toting around a 600 page book. Then to have him re-read it is amazing.

It could just be me, but I think that some childrens' books could help increase your vocabulary, and possibly even help your grammar.

I remember when I was little my cousin's parents would forbid her from owning toy unicorns or pegasus and other mythical creatures and the movie Cinderella was not allowed in the house because it contained &quot;Magic&quot;.
So they drowned her in barbies and mindless Sweet Valley high books. Mind you their rules didn't stop her from reading anything with Magic in it. In fact she found it even more fascinating.
