137GB Limit on Hard Drive..

Alrighty just got my new build up and running but I noticed that the 320GB Sata hard drive I got is limited to 137GB. Now I've googled it and I've seen a lot of folks talking about how Windows XP SP1 should fix the issue. Does this mean I'll need another hard drive with <SP1 on it to format the drive I got so that it shows more than 137GB?

Old version of OS' did not support the large drives.

Upgrade to WinXP SP2, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322389

You could just create a partition with the unused space, or if you don't mind reinstalling Windows, use nLite to slipstream Service Pack 2 into your install disc and you won't have to worry about this in the future either.

EDIT: Install SP2 anyway, regardless of whether you plan to create a slipstreamed disc. You can also use Partition Magic to merge your current 137GB partition with the unused space if you'd rather have one large partition.

I'm actually running WinXP Pro SP2 on said hard drive and it doesn't appear to have fixed the issue. Will it show up as an unformatted partition separate from my current 137GB one or will it magically add the space?

If you fire up Disk Management (it's in the Control Panel under Administrative Tools, can't remember exactly where it is on XP), you'll see the unpartitioned space on the drive. From there you can just create a partition in that space, or try one of the other suggestions.

ms wanted people to move to ntfs. artificial limit on fat32 to that limit. things like partition magic can format big drives, or just use partitions

..or just use the manufacturers' free software to fix the problem.

This has nothing to do with NTFS\FAT32, XP just won't format a partition larger than 137GB no matter what file system you're using. SP1 fixed this issue.
