I just built a new comp with a A7N8X Deluxe and a 200gb western digital drive. I am installing windows for the first time and when prompted to format to an NTFS partition it is only showing as a 131gb drive... any help?

You've got some options:

[*]Make a 5-10gb partition. After the XP install, install SP1 and the rest of your space should be available.
[*]Use partition magic after the install if you don;t want a partitioned drive.
[*]Create your own slipstreamed sp1 cd.

Windows XP doesn't support 48-bit LBA without service pack 1. If you want one big partition you can create one, install winxp, install sp1, then you can extend the partition to the full size of the drive. You could also just create a 100gig partition, install winxp, installl sp1, then create another partition on the remaining free space. This would actually give you a 100gig, and an 86 gig.

You don't need partition magic, there is a built in command line disk management utility outside of the one under the computer management mmc. You can extend the 5 or 10 gig part using this.

However partition magic will work. I was aware of diskpart but failed to mention it. Glad you did!

aright... so i formatted with 131gb and booted into windows. I installed SP1, and I am now going to enable the 48-bit LBA. Does this extra space on the HD just appear after the registry fix or how does it work? Or do I have to reformat once again?

Go into disk management and the space should show up there as unallocated. You can create another volume with it or use partition magic to merge it into your existing one without losing data (in theory), or you can just delete the old partition and create a new one of the full size.

What would that solve? Please read the reply from bigshooter, and the one I posted right after him. There are URL's that contain the "fix".

Am I supposed to install windows xp on one partition (131gb), install SP1 and then what...
I went into disk management and none of the unallocated space is showing up so I cant expand
the drive to the full 186gb.. I also performed the regedit value, EnableBigLba, but seemed to do nothing
after the restart.

Was I initially supposed to create 2 partitions, ex. 100gb & 86gb, instead of only a 131gb?
I am shooting for one partition if possible. (186gb)

Had similar issue w/ my friends 180gb on 2k pro. it would show as a 128gb i think? ended up finding that u have to have sp3 and then add a key to the reg to enable the 48 bit..lba or whatever it was. doing that it worked. so you'll just have to make an additional partition of the extra space after you get sp and add the key. i'm not sure if the key is the same thing that xp needs though.. haven't dealt w/ it on there. just my exp w/ 2k pro.
