was the 5700u's shader performance really that bad ?

IIRC, the 5700U has a 128-bit bus.
GDDR3 is pointless as a feature to buy a card for.
You should look at overall speed of the card, not the RAM type.

incorrect...you mean that 128bit 9800pro is half the speed of 9800pro 256bit...
The thing is that 256 bit only matters if the data is great more than 128bit. Then only 128bit can be transferred... A 256bit mus an a geforce2 MX wont make it any faster
