was the 5700u's shader performance really that bad ?

what are your opinions on the 5700u as an upgrade to an fx5200 ??

waste of money. 9800 pro or 5900xt would be a minimum for a good upgrade. granted, anything is faster than your 5200.

i guess the 5700u is just a touch over gf4 ti4600 performance


anyone else have thoughts on what might be a good gddr3 purchase for under 200 that isn't ati ??

DDR3 on 5700u is a gimmick, no difference in perf. And there's very few reasons to get an FX series card over an equivalent 9xxx ATi part, so explain if you would. Also waiting is advised...once the new gen is done gouging we should see a overall price drop...everyone wins if they are willing to wait.

gddr3 is just cool, nothing like 1ghz mem speed and the lower voltage higher bandwidth etc,. real world results to me is overclocking

yeah i might just hafta wait this one out
maybe i'll just get a new sound card and hard drive in the mean time...

Yea who cares about some marketing gimmick called gddr3? I'd look at overall performance, and wouldn't care if a given card used EDO memory. If it was faster, I'd buy it.

Sure. 5800U has DDR2 at 1000MHz and is waaaaayyyy faster than a 5700U. (and can be softmodded into a Quadro)

OK yeah soul Linux support is one of those few reasons I was referring to (monitor spanning was the other, which matters to me), so now we just wait for supply on next gen cards to catch up and the prices on the 6800nu should drop to ~250 (you could already get the CompUSA PNY one for 210, but PNY eats it). Plus if you can get a copy of FarCry with your 6800 (eVGA) then that might actually be considered a reasonable part of the price unlike most bundled software (Tomb Raider =! value).

IIRC, the 5700U has a 128-bit bus.

GDDR3 is pointless as a feature to buy a card for.
You should look at overall speed of the card, not the RAM type.

incorrect...you mean that 128bit 9800pro is half the speed of 9800pro 256bit...

The thing is that 256 bit only matters if the data is great more than 128bit. Then only 128bit can be transferred... A 256bit mus an a geforce2 MX wont make it any faster

the thing is, the 256bus on the 5900 is far more next gen than ddr3 on a 5700 ever will be. there is no way you can feel like you "got the next gen stuff" when playing with a card that is by all means weaker than what you could have had for the same price.

5900xt 256mb is 100 bucks more than the 128mb one, and roughly the same price as the 6800
also newegg is now selling the bfg GT for 500 bucks

What McArra said was correct: 1 Ghz in a 128-bit (memory) bus = 500MHz in a 256-bit (memory) bus.

He didn't say anything about that making a card half as fast, only that it means a 128-bit bus has half the memory bandwidth of a 256-bit card at the same clockspeed.


So, getting a 900 MHz GDDR3 equipped card with a 128 bit bus is equivalent to a 450 MHz DDR equipped card with a 256-bit bus.

So, despite the fact that the 5700U comes with 900MHz GDDR3, the fact that it's on a 128-bit bus means that it's slower, and has less memory bandwidth than a Radeon 9800 with 680MHz DDR 1 on a 256-bit bus.
