1360 x 768 overkill?

My computer is hooked up to a 32 inch lcd tv with a native resolution of 1360 x 768 @ 60 hz. I have no intention on changing this as I really enjoy the picture quality and size. With my current computer specs (core i5 2310, 8 gig ddr3, radeon 4870 512meg, 600 watt corsair psu, win 7 64bit) would upgrading my gpu to a 6870/gtx560 be overkill at that resolution or do i have some headroom considering the age of my card? Most Benchmark tests I see are usually at twice my playable resolution so its hard to compare apples to apples. I am currently playing just cause 2, borderlands, far cry 2, and a little vanilla wow on a private server they all run flawlessly, but i am always looking for something new to play.

Yes, it will be an overkill. Igot the HD4870 1GB version & playing games @ 1680x1050 and so far idont feel like I need more fps in most games. i'm not intersted in BF3/crysis1/Metro2033 (which are GPU heavy when everything crancked up).

I'd say test first then if you need the extra performance upgrade GPU, my 0.02$

If you're not going any higher than 1360x768, then keep your current card. You're plenty fine.

Only thing feature wise you are missing with that graphics card is support for DirectX 11 but the only games that really use that are BF3, Crysis 2 and Metro 2033. Batman : Arkham City doesn't count as a DirectX 11 game in my book.

You'll be fine, eventually I would suggest upgrading to an HD7850 just for a decent amount of future-proofing.

What are you confused about?

OP, I would stay with what you have unless you feel you must have DX11.

Curious what 32" lcd tv is not using a low quality panel. All I've seen are pretty much the worst for image quality that I've seen (in comparison to all other display devices, the only thing worse are the 26" ones from what I've seen).

I'm using a 32" older Vizio as my monitor and it also only does 1366x768 (720P) resolution. But this tv uses an IPS screen that is awesome for games. The colors are much more vibrant than a TN LCD monitor.

I think a lot of TV's use better panels than the TN panels you commonly find in cheap monitors. He said he's happy with it, not that it's better than xyz brand monitor. I'm happy with my 26.5" TN panel, some people would not be. He said he enjoys the picture quality of his 32" TV, some people may not. Nothing to really be confused about here. :)

Thanks for the replies i guess I'll save my money for now. To whoever was confused about my satisfaction with this tv I am aware there are better ones, I just don't care because it looks fine to me:)

I use a 32inch hdtv as my monitor aswell. I actually like it because I don't need a shit load of gpu power and the money saved is a boat load

A GTX460 might be really nice at that resolution, basically full max in everything including modern games. Your call, of course.

The picture quality and size of a 32" TV at 1360x768 is pretty much bottom of the barrel, TV's make bad monitors and such a small resolution for a large screen gives you a very bad PPI (Pixels Per Inch)

In terms of an upgrade, it's not worth it, at such a small resolution the 4870 is going to do everything you need, I'd only bother upgrading when you actually find some games that don't run smoothly.

As said before, unless you want DX-11 there is no point changing the HD4870.

You'll be fine. I remember playing oblivion on a 32" inch LCD TV when the game came out...it was beautiful and FUN :)

I use a 32in LCD TV as well for my computer monitor. Its 1366/768 resolution which is perfectly fine for me. I sit about 10ft or more from the TV and can still see the icons and text good enough. Its not 1080p crispy but plenty fine for me. Even in games. (I don't play to many high-end games anyways.) :)

No it cant, no DX 11. You might have been right if the quoted poster hadnt mentioned modern games though.

So a game designed to take advantage of DX11 tools will not run at all on my 4870? if thats the case than I will replace it.

lol and I think 1080P doesn't look good enough...

My phone has almost as many pixels as that TV. ;)

Heh, mine too. But the difference is im not staring at my 4.3" phone screen from 7 or 8 feet away. This TV is in my man cave/den and I sit on a couch while i game. I even made a sort of tray thing out of plywood and spray paint so I can be completely comfortable. At any rate the tv is too far away from me to see the jaggies, buts its far enough away that anything smaller is too small. Hi res 32 in monitors are lil pricey so my "crappy, bottom of the barrel, got it in a cracker jack box" tv is staying for now. :p
