Hi all,

Well finally after of months of debating and deliberating over what to get, i've bit the bullet and ordered my new pc. Thanks to everyone here, you know who you are that has helped me along the way. I've asked countless questions and you've given great answers. I eventually decided on an Athlon 939 3500+ 90nm CPU, MSI K8N Neo 4 Platinum SLI and eVGA 6800 GT PCI Express.

The setup is not yet complete, I want a 74gb 10,000 RPM Raptor as my primary drive and a Hyundai LD90+ 19 LCD Monitor, but will have to wait for now .... if I order anymore my wife will have kittens. Main suppliers of my parts were NewEgg, CompUSA and Monarch, I also used PC ToyLand for the PSU.

So here at the final specs:

CPU:
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 512K 90nm (939) Retail

Motherboard:
MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI Audio/GB-LAN/PC

Case:
Thermaltake VA3000 Dream Tower Black VA3000BWA ATX Case with Transparent X type side panel window

PSU:
X-Connect 500W ATX PS w/2 80mm Fans - Black

Memory:
Corsair Value Select (Dual Pack) 184 Pin 512MBx2 DDR PC-3200

Hard Drive:
Western Digital Caviar 300GB, 7200RPM, Internal EIDE Hard Drive

Video:
eVGA nVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT Video Card, 256MB GDDR3, 256-Bit, Dual DVI/TV-Out, PCI-Express, Model "256-P2-N376-AX"

DVD:
NEC 16X Double Layer DVDRW Drive, Black, Model ND-3520A BK, OEM

Still to get:

Monitor (going to use my 17" CRT Viewsonic for now) :
ImageQuest L90D+ 19" LCD Monitor w/ Speakers, 8ms and DVI RETAIL -$379

Primary Hard Drive:
Western Digital Raptor 74GB 10,000RPM SATA Hard Drive, Model WD740GD, OEM

2nd Video Card:
eVGA nVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT Video Card, 256MB GDDR3, 256-Bit, Dual DVI/TV-Out, PCI-Express, Model "256-P2-N376-AX"

Thanks again to everyone, this forum rocks! Can't wait to build this puppy!

I would recomend against that monitor and sli 6800gts. The monitor is good, but your really going to notice no difference between one and two 6800gts at 1280x1024. I would recomend getting a monitor with 1600x1200. Wait for the Dell 2001fp to go on sale for ~500 and buy that. There is no performance gain for sli at a resoulution like 1280x1024.

Thanks for the recommendations, found a refurb here for $539... but i'd prefer a new screen:

Then on Dell, whats the difference between these 2? Apart from the dimensions, if they have the same response times (does anyone know what they are) I think i'd go for the 2005FPW...

2005FPW:

2001FP:

Their are a few things I would definetly change in your system.

1. Change the motherboard to a DFI SLI Nforce 4 Motherboard. I've had trouble in the past with MSI.

2. Change the X-Connect PSU. I have also had trouble with this PSU spikes on the voltages when doing anything intensive. Get an antec or ocz modular ps.

3. Think about getting just 1 good video card like a 6800 ultra. I don't recommend SLI much because soon they will come out with video cards that are 3 x faster than the current x800xl. I'd rather have 1 good video card (lower power consumpution, noise, and price). Besides, unless you are going to get a 24" dell LCD - the FPS will not matter at the lower resolutions.

The Dell 2005FPW is a widescreen LCD. They are both sub 16ms response times and good monitors. I'd recommend that you get a 2045 Dell LCD currently on sale from $860 - $940 (Check Hot Deals). This monitor is 24" and is huge (+12ms response time). It has a high resolution that would go great to challenge your SLI configuration.

2001 FP is the bomb. Its ability to do 1200 x 1600 portrait mode is worth the cost alone. You'll never have to scroll down too far on that screen.
