Bleach it. Yellow patches are due to your deodarant/anti-persperant, plain and simple. Try switching brands or not applying half the stick to your underarms on a daily basis.

So do I let the shirt sit in a bucket of bleach + water for a while and wash it afterwards?

Or you can wash all your whites together and add bleach to the wash as needed, like normal people. 😛
 
nasty...I wasn't able to respond yesterday since I couldn't log in (bah). But yeah, bleach the hell out of it...and from the sound of things, you've seen these patches before, so why didn't you do something about it then?
 
ehhhh....old perspiration stains are very tough to remove, if possible at all. i regularly get stuff at work i cant get out.

if youre going to bleach, test an area first if the jersey isnt 100% cotton, some synthetics (such as polysester) can yellow when bleached...and you dont want the whole shirt to look like it got pissed on 🙂

also, soaking it for a *long* time may help. odds are this isnt coming out, being so old, and having been washed and dried many times before. if a drycleaner is nearby ask if they can give it a try; its not unusual for us to work on a customers garment for specific stains before we clean things (indeed, stains are often removed better before a cleaning) but if its something very bad we dont charge them for it, since we couldnt do anything. Worth a shot anyway...but i imagine youll end up needing a new jersey, or wearing one with yellowed pits :/
 
I bleach my whites with clorox in every wash, and some of my whites that I've had for YEARS still have armpits stains.

Don't use too much bleach - it'll literally weaken the fabric, and eventually destroy it.
 
I found the following on some cleaning website:
I believe the solution is 3 aspirin in one gallon warm water with a touch of white vinegar. Let soak for several hours. Rinse, and wash as ususal. Hope this helps. The aspirin breaks down perspiration stains.
