I had the Leadtek 6800, that had the massive heatsink around it. Good thing my motherboard came with a peg to hold the end of the card into place. I remember you could take some of the 12pipeline/5shader 6800's, and turn them into 6800GT's using rivatuner.

I remember that. I recall it was only the AGP ones that could be unlocked into a GT though - and I had the PCIe one .

Yea, by the time the PCIe ones came out, they realized they had to hard cut the lines, not just turn them off in firmware.

Yeah, my 6800GT was a Leadtek and it had that huge copper heatsink that weighed a ton.

Wow... Giants: Citizen Kabuto is only $6. No idea what the other game in the bundle is. Either way, must remember to add it to the cart next time I order something from GoGamer. I was afraid it'd turn out to be one of those rare games that people are selling as collector's items.

EDIT: Ugh, just had a look at the system reqs:

Yeah, so have I. First I had a TNT2, then it was a Radeon 7500, then it was a Radeon x1300, then a 7600GT, then a x1950 Pro, then a 3870, and soon it will be a 4850! Nothing against Nvidia though; the 7600GT was badass for it's price.

I recently got a Diamond Monster Fusion though. Voodoo Banshee baby!

amber, can you edit the list to include the info people posted here.. for example, several people confirmed that #7 is Giants Citizen Kabuto (I agree, it is clearly this game, one of my favorite games too).

But mainly I would say its the giant beetles, they are identical and only exist in that game.

too bad i didn't find this thread early, I would have ended up with credit for identifying all but the racing games (eww )

I remember when the Hercules brand (owned by Elsa?) was used to market an overclocked TNT2 Ultra or something like that. My friends and I were TOTALLY drooling over that. IIRC it was the first NVidia card openly sold as overclocked.

Man, the video card market was interesting back in those days. There was alot more competitors (3DFX, S3, Matrox, nVIDIA, ATI, etc) which really spiced things up and so many choices to choose from.

I have to give nVIDIA credit for some great mid range products like the ti4200, and more notably the 6600GT (then theres 7600GT/9600GT/8800GT]. Man i could remember almost everyone i knew who loved gaming had that card (with some of the more "rich" having the more expensive 6800GT).

Now waiting for walking down the ATi memory lane.

What were the last ATI releases that failed, like the FX5800 did? The only ones I remember by them really screwing up was the 2x00 series, which was very recent anyway.

After looking at similar screenshots from Rallisport, I'd have to agree with you and change my guess. I didn't even think of that game cause I didn't think it had come out in 2002. Rallisport had nice graphics but the physics was crap. IMO the best rally game so far (in terms of realism) has been Richard Burns Rally.

Oh and I gotta say, the funniest part of that article is the rundown of the plethora of 8800/9600 cards all based on G80/G92 (and that's not even counting the low end cards).

Why do you think the 2x00 series was a screwup? I'm using a 2600 Pro in my HTPC and it does everything I want of it, including playing some games such as WoW and Flatout2 at full 1080p... without a fan.

The X1800 series was quickly replaced by the X1900.

It wasn't a failure though at least performance wise and was a good match for the 7800 series...whereas the 5800 didn't perform very well against the 9700pro.

I don't think there's any more recent family of GPUs than the GeForce FX that was as big of a screw up. Both the 5800 and 5600 had to be replaced by respective 5900 and 5700 flavors to fix serious design flaws in order to improve performance to competitive levels or even to get them to actually play games.

But as far as flagships go, yeah, the 2900 did come pretty close to the 5800.

Some people did consider the X1800 a failure. Why? it was many months late, and when it was released it only performed around 5% faster than the 7800GTX 256mb overall. Adding insult to injury it was quickly replaced by the R580.
