get a macbook air for light cruizing ($500 for used 128gb ssd model from 2008 in decent shape) and a macbook pro 17" for heavy duty work (used core 2 duo 1920x1200 matte $1200).

If you are rich you can buy both new but that can get really expensive.

I combined both with a current gen MBA.

well, I'm running SC2 on my 1080p external, sure - lowest settings but still, it works. You don't need to check the link to know it's not a gaming machine, but.. it gets by.

how did you get 1920x1200 on a current mba? lol.
well to be obvious, he can always use an external display if resolution matters. Pretty sure his new MBA is faster than any Core 2 Duo MacBook from a couple years ago. Your suggestion to purchase 2 used C2D Macs (one 17") is just peculiar.

It is but i love the situation - one nice small fast machine and the lightest 17" i could find that was quality - now if apple will make me a nice 4lb 17" 2560x1600 macbook air i'd be all over that.

If you are looking for something lighter and more portable, then you could go for the air. Though if you want some more muscle to your computer, you should be going for the pro.

I see that you are looking forward to customizing your mac, then the pro is obviously the option for you. You have to take note that the air uses a different type of hard drive almost similar to that of the iPod classic. So that means, you have to get it from apple directly and no chance of ssds.

Um, you can already upgrade the SSD's, and you're wrong about the HD's, o_O

I'm really torn, going to buy one or the other, will be my primary system, sorta kinda leaning towards the MBP because I can add ram, and an SSD drive over time...

Opinions?

Go with MBP for long term investment.
