I've struggled to find good benchmark comparisons specifically on how the different models perform in video editing tasks?

A friend is buying a new mac laptop, wants 13" and the only demanding workload will be some video editing. We're not talking any pro use, more like blogger casual use. It would be great to have some type of quantifiable performance difference for the above scenario so that the $$ vs bang could be measured?

It'll be a 256gb/16gb config so the cost difference after that isn't huge.

You're actually looking at the spec that matters the least!

The big difference is the processor attached to those graphics. The Iris 640 is attached to the 2.3GHz low-voltage Core i5, while the Iris 650 is attached to a 3.1GHz regular Core i5. That'll make a significant difference in video encoding performance. The Iris graphics difference won't be big enough to make a practical difference when actually editing.

As for a recommendation: it really depends on how often these videos will go up and how important that it is they render quickly. If it's only occasional or not particularly crucial, the 2.3GHz model is more than enough. On the other hand, if your friend aspires to be the next Casey Neistat with frequent videos and lots of editing, they'll want to go straight to the 3.1GHz system.
