Does anyone know when to expect these systems? I'm waiting for a solid portable solution on which to do GPGPU development. Asus would be ideal, but they don't seem to be in a rush to get these out. I would also try AMD graphics, but I'd like to have the option for CUDA in addition to OpenCL. I find it a little bizarre that companies are dragging their feet a bit on 13 inch laptops given their rising popularity.

Thanks for any insight.

Acer Aspire TimelineX 3830TG

But it's acer, glossy, 1366 x 768 and no optical (which I think is anyway the future). Pricing here is very good actually for this model. Btu again I assume the screen is pretty much useless.

No manufacturer has the guts to stick much as possible in little space as possible as they used to do anymore. What happened to putting regular laptop chips into 5-inch screen form factors?

Now they call 13-inch laptops "Ultraportables", and 10-inchers "Tablets" and "Netbooks".

The closest I think will be waiting for R3 of Alienware m11x to come out. Ok, its not 13 inches, but its an 11.6-inch so even more portable.

the alien ware is a joke it's the size/weight of at least a 13" with a 11" screen.

I am not sure what to blame, but the race for the bottom is what has left us where we are. Netbooks were supposed to be these ultra-cheap, ultra-small, kind of crummy but get the job done little laptops. Instead they never really changed their price, and laptops just got cheaper to match them. So now we have $400 laptops at Best Buy et al, and I just don't see it as a good thing. Too many corners cut, too many compromises made.

Wow. The Acer is exactly what I want. It's got USB 3.0 and the HDD is easily accessible so I can swap it out for an SSD. The brushed blue color is quite nice too. The only minor downside is the glossy screen, but I can live with it. Thanks for that post! Now it just has to come out here in the US soon.

Panasonic J10
Intel Core i7-2620M (Sandy Bridge)
up to 8GB RAM
normal notebook 2.5" drive (factory options up to 256GB SSD)
7 hour battery
10" widescreen 1366x768
as low as 2.05 pounds

That's about 2/3 the weight of a typical netbook, but with a high end CPU in it.
