Thirteen female corrections officers essentially handed over control of a Baltimore jail to gang leaders, prosecutors said. The officers were charged Tuesday in a federal racketeering indictment.

The indictment described a jailhouse seemingly out of control. Four corrections officers became pregnant by one inmate. Two of them got tattoos of the inmate’s first name, Tavon — one on her neck, the other on a wrist.

I think jail guards tend to be just as corrupt as some of the bad inmates incarcerated. I had a chance to have drinks with a friend who brought his brother to our little gathering, and he was a prison guard. The things he talked about made me cringe, and he thought of inmates as less than human, and he himself did things that were highly illegal.

You have to ask yourself, where is the oversight? Who the hell is monitoring these places?

Ironically the only difference between him and the inmates is that he hasn't been caught yet.
 
Good thing our brilliant governor was too busy getting the death penalty repealed to make sure our prisons were being competently run 🙄
 
People need to wake up and understand that the prison system is not there to incarcerate society's lawbreakers. it's there to make a profit.

I would far prefer that people wake up and understand that we should be attempting to rehabilitate at least 50-60% of our inmates instead of doing what we currently do; We send them to fucking Criminal University where they not only lose the ability to get a decent job when they are released but they learn damn near all of the tricks and trades of criminal business. They re-enter society with 10 times the criminal knowledge that they left it with and without the ability to get a job...... Yup, thats a great recipe for success right there and its absolutely the best thing that can be done to help society in general.

I am not talking about violent criminals, they are not the majority of our inmates.
 
I read about this earlier today. Sad, but not surprising. Guard pay and standards are very low. Bribes and other inducements were used, along with a promise of safety to gain staff compliance. Sounds like the guy was quite the charmer. Too bad there are babies involved.
 
It sounds like the underlying issue was that the guard to inmate ratio is too low (and they don't have enough meaningful punishments to use against bad inmates) for the the DOC to maintain control of the jail. Management informally agreed to turn a blind eye to some gang activities as long as the gang leader maintained order.
 
The prison-industrial complex is truly one of the most disgusting things about America.

But this guy did deserve to be inside.

I'd say our crime rate is one of the most disgusting things about our country.

BTW, I agree that the war on drugs is an idiotic public policy disaster that should be ended ASAP but it's not like guys like this would become law abiding citizens if drugs were legalized.
