Do I have to have my state's murder statutes tattooed to my body so you can't kill me? Ignorance of the law is no excuse.

Now that I read that it does sound funny. I meant we don't bring them back, we either recycle or throw them away. ;)

so its illegal because they didnt buy the cans in MI?

so it illegal to return a can in a state you did not purchase it in?

The cans are free in some states that don't have a deposit.

and returning them to a diff state is illegal?

i did not know that and im sure most people didnt

I knew that... There was a case about 10 years ago where a small town on the border of (Vermont?) decided that instead of raising taxes, they'd collect all the cans and bottles and return them to the neighboring state. They were smacked down pretty quickly.

It's far worse up here in Canadia. They charge a deposit on EVERYTHING. Not just soda and beer and whatnot, but on any kind of plastic/glass container with a liquid in it, you pay an "environmental fee". You have to return literally every container you ever buy just so you don't lose hundreds of dollars every year.

Yes, I'd much rather have them lining the side of the road...

Exactly, I bet here in Michigan we cut down our e-way street cleaning costs by 10x when the deposit was enacted. Still, too many products aren't subjected to the deposit like ice tea or water. We need to change this.

In Oregon we have these bar code scanner return machines that are a giant pain in the ass to deal with. Often times they will reject bottles and cans that were purchased with a deposit simply because they aren't in the machine's database.
Beyond that they break down often and smell horrible.

How?

Simple: you go to a beverage place that has tons of 5 cent returns. You purchase $1000 worth of 5 cent returns. You drive to Michigan and make a huge margin of profit.

OK this is how it works.

You buy a Diet coke for $1.00. the state adds on another .10 cents(Deposit/Fee) to make your diet-coke cost $1.10. Bring the can back and you get your .10 back.

What they did was take cans from states that don;t charge a deposit/fee such as this and then return them to a state that ahs a fee. Since they never paid the can fee they are in fact stealing from the state.

What about cans that never get returned? The state is in fact stealing from you then?

I don't think the problem is if you are on vacation in wisconsin, buy a 12 pack of pop for the ride home and then return them in michigan for th 1.20 is where the real problem exists.
You're not supposed to be able to return them here in Michigan. If you look on the can it shouldn't say anything about a MI 10 cent deposit, IIRC.

A 12-pack of pop is cheaper in WI, my Mom sometimes will pick some up if she goes there for another reason. When they're empty, we don't bring them back, recycle or throw them away.

I could've sworn I've seen MI: 10c on cans/etc, and it wasn't when I was in Michigan. Perhaps I'll have to look again.

NEWMAN: It's the truck, Kramer. The truck!

KRAMER: Look, Newman, I told you to let this thing go.

NEWMAN: No, no, no, no no. Listen to me. Most days, the post office

sends one truckload of mail to the second domestic regional sorting facility in

Sagenaw, Michigan.

KRAMER: (interested) Uh-huh.

NEWMAN: But, on the week before holidays, we see a surge. On

alentine's Day, we send two trucks. On Christmas, four, packed to the brim. And tomorrow,

if history is any guide, will see some spillover into a fifth truck.

KRAMER: (realisation) Mother's Day.

NEWMAN: The mother of all mail days. And guess who signed up for the

truck.

KRAMER: A free truck? Oh boy, that completely changes our cost

structure. Our G and A goes down fifty percent.

NEWMAN: (excited) We carry a coupla bags of mail, and the rest is ours!

KRAMER: Newman, you magnificent bastard, you did it!

NEWMAN: (triumph) Let the collecting begin!

Yeah, but it was paid for by that person who bought it.

Its kinda bull, most likely because it was half a mill.

No, but there is usually a sign saying "NO OUT OF STATE CANS" at the places where you return them. Pretty obvious.

right, it's only the most successful large-scale recycling program ever.

96% of MI eligible containers that go out come back.
Average across all states with bottle bills: 78%
states without bottle bills: 23%

God, what an awful thing.

I was going to add that Canada is known for being very clean. I bet this is also part of that reason.
Sorry but I see more good then bad.
