12in netbooks

hey, are there any other 12 in netbooks available? i feel like this is a great size even though some might think that it almost reaches the size of regular laptops.

theres a bunch of 10in models but i dont know of any 12in ones other than dell. another option might be the msi u300, which i dont think is out yet but will be a 13.3in model

The HP DV2 should be released relatively soon. It will feature the AMD Neo @ 1.6Ghz and an ATI 3450 GPU. It will no doubt be more powerful than Atom + GMA950. HP has a website where you can reserve one, which means it should be out shortly.

However, with nVidia and the ION platform, it might be better to wait a while. Based on nVidia's new 9400M GPU, I gotta say it is by far the best platform. Consumes less power under load than X4500, but has 5x the performance in real world applications. Incredable and so far is only in the Mac Book right now. I can't wait until the IGP is used more 'affordable' laptops. Paired with a ULV CPU from Intel, and decent 6-9 cell battery, the thing should churn out at least a couple of hours while gaming on it. Can't wait! 😀

I thought Dell released an XPS notebook based on this platform.... let me go see if I can dig it up.

Yeah, that would be the platform. Unfortunately, I can't find any reviews on that and it looks damn ugly. I wouldn't touch that thing with a 10 foot pole based on how it looks. Why can't PC's follow the same design as BMW? Just make it tastefully simple like Apple does. Dell makes all this gawdy looking crap that I wouldn't be caught dead with.

Anyway, I'd like to see battery life on that unit... Also, I would like to see the ULV option for a CPU.

You think that's ugly? I don't think it's the best looking, but it certainly isn't ugly.

I'm pretty sure MSI has a 12" or else 13.3" laptop in the works. It looks fantastic. There was an article at AT about it; they said it's very similar to the MacBook Air in terms of design, size, and weight. I'm pretty sure they said it would cost around $800.

Why do you want a 12" netbook when you can get a faster laptop at more or less the same price that's around 13" or 14" big? I would never pay over $500ish for a netbook.

Yeah, I may have been over dramatic. I don't think it is as bad as I made it sound, but I really don't like it at all. The two-tone needs to go. At least the way they presented it. If that was gone, the laptop would be passable, IMO. But still doesn't match the beauty of a macbook. To bad I have such a dislike for apple, or I would consider one.

Have you seen the photos of the Dell Adamo which was presented at CES? That thing looked pretty slick.

I wonder what will be available when it comes time to replace the laptop in my sig.... still have another year and a half of undergrad and it's in great condition.

I have yet to see a 12" or 13" laptop for $500 or less. If you know of one, please tell me so I can promptly go purchase one.

I don't think you'll see a 12" or 13" for under $500; that's usually the realm of the 15.4" notebooks. I'd say once you get above 12", you're in notebook reason. Why get something notebook-sized when you're not going to be getting notebook-power.

good luck with running osx on the new ones 🙂 new chipsets for the most part.

pick yourself up a cheap msi wind or mini-9 if you plan to run hackintosh ever

the new ones using the z5xx series chips suck. they are using the poulsbo chipset which is for MIDs and you wont be able to run mac os x.

the poulsbo also only supports a max res of 1366x768 (even on external) and only max 1gb ram.

that is one of the main drawbacks of teh 12" dell.

I have a Toshiba U200, it's a 12'' laptop and I really like it.
I bought it a couple of years ago, I think they still sell it because I found it on a store last month. I don't know about the prices in the US, but it should be less than $600.
It's not a netbook, of course is far more powerful. I think there are no reasons to buy a netbook of 12'', when you can buy a laptop with a big hard disk and all the stuff...

The Samsung NC20 is supposed to be released in February. That's a 12" version of the NC10.

it will feature slightly different internals though, it will have the Via Nano chip, which outperforms the atom at the same clock speed

And consumes 4x the power of the Atom CPU under load... It all depends on what your requirements are I guess. Performance, battery life, light weight... pick 2.
