Reading the Gateway store closings thread in ATHD reminded me of this:
When Montgomery Ward went bankrupt, I visited the local store to check out the bargains. Found a couple of small items and went to the checkout when . . .
The cashier glared at me and said "It's because of people like you that we're going out of business!"
At first, I was speechless, then I retorted: "It's because of employees like you that the store is going out of business."
I didn't really hold it against her though, I know how it feels to lose a job, but still, I was shocked/amused. I wondered what it was about me that prompted her comment.
