128MEG VS 256MEG 6800GT?

Hi all...

I actually found a really good deal on a 128MEG 6800GT. Am I gonna get way less performance from the 128MEG model compared to the 256 MEG model? Man the cost increase is incredible... However I have heard of textures maxing out 128MEG cards with some of today's games and that worries me.

Thanks

Games I will play on my AMD64 3200/2300Mhz (1GB or Ram) are EQ1(2box), EQ2 and WOS...

Hmmm..........6800 GT with 128MB RAM? Never heard of it. Are you sure its not a vanilla 6800? Need linky
As far as 128MB vs 256MB, IMO I would invest in 256MB now. Either go with a really inexpensive 128MB card (Like 6600 or 9800 Pro) and get a 256MB later (or even 512, who knows) or go all out and get a nice 256MB card now (i.e. 6800GT).

Asus 9999 6800GT is a card with 128MB RAM and it's a 6800GT.
It does exist.
In the UK, the 128MB GT is less than the 6800NU, while the 6800GT 256 is obviously quite a lot more expensive.

IIRC though its not an actual GT, it does have GDDR3, but I think it's 700MHz as opposed to the GT's 1000... I could be wrong, but I think I read that somewhere. either way, it's not a true GT, it's an Asus only thing... (However its not a bad card when found for the right price)

Well, as long as you realize it's not really a true 6800GT. With only 128MB of 350/700mhz ram, it certainly won't perform like a true GT. Maybe you can overclock it, but the ram is regular DDR rather than DDR3.

Asus 128mb 6800 GT = 6800nu crappy ram + 6800 GT core = Normal softmoddable 6800nu. Not worth any more money than a nu

Is this the card being referred to? digit-life benches of ASUS V9999 "Gamer Edition". 12 pipes, 256MB of GDDR3@500/1000 speeds. It's faster than a stock 6800 (duh), but not as fast as a real 6800GT (duh).

If you're referring to some sort of 6800GT (that is, 16 pipes) with 128MB of DDR1... it must be new, because I can't seem to find any info or reviews/benchmarks.

No, he's referring to the Asus "GT" at NewEgg with only 128MB of only 700MHz memory. Just spend the extra $50 for the real thing, IMO.

Ah, found it (eventually -- is a link so hard, people?). I dunno. $340 versus $390-400+, and the only difference is the slower memory. I would think a 16 pipe/700Mhz card would perform better than a 12-pipe/1000Mhz one (at least without AA/AF, or in shader-heavy titles).

I'm kinda surprised nobody's reviewed or benchmarked it. Anyone with a 6800GT want to underclock their RAM and run a few tests?

Rollo already has:

Sort of. He doesn't have anything benched at exactly the right settings. He tested 16 pipes @NU speeds (325/700) and 16 pipes at GT speeds (350/1000), but not 16 pipes at 350/700. It would be nice to see how much of the difference between 325/700 and 350/1000 is because of the bandwidth difference, and how much is because of the fillrate difference.

go find some, they are easy to find.

Actually, I searched. Repeatedly. None of the major review sites seem to have benched this card yet.

I did (eventually) find this: some german site.

With AA/AF -- or at least with less than 4xAA and 16xAF -- it's almost as fast as a real 6800GT (they didn't bench the 325/1000 6800NU alongside it, but it seems closer to a real GT than that card was). At 4xAA/16xAF, it's noticeably slower, especially at 1600x1200 (where it just falls apart because of the limited bandwidth).

CompUSA is selling the PNY 6800 for $230 - $30MIR again. Among a $220 6800 and a $390 6800GT, a $345 half-assed GT doesn't seem that attractive to me.
