1280x1024@85Hz is it a resonal resolution for 17" CRT?

I plan to buy me the Iiyama 704UTc because of the colorful blue-silver design (I really hate the
commen computer white/gray) and I wonder if the highest resolution of 1280x1024@85 Hz is
usable on the 17" CRT. It's got the Diamondtron M2 CRT so I think the picture should be noticably
sharper and clearer than on the common non-trinitron masks am I right? 😕
 
That'll probably depend on what video card you are using, and what the refresh rate can the monitor handle at that res.
I'm using a Diamondtron monitor and G3Ti200 video card but at 1280x1024 my refresh rate is only 60Hz, which is unbearable.
 
1152 X 864 is a very good resolution. On mine, I can get a 75 Hz refresh rate on my Sony HMD A-200 17". Since it is flat, 60Hz looks fine.
 
Go for it Iiyama makes some very nice monitors. I run the same exact res on my Viewsonic PF775 and it's just fine.
 
i run 1024x768 on 21" at company, and 1280X1024 on 21" at home. Just personal perference.

You should work under 100Hz, if your video card supports that. 85Hz is minimum. 100 is better (sure).
 
If you can handle the small type, go for it. I do, but a lot of people (older) go for the 1024*768 on 17's. Officially, companies recommend 1024
 
12X10 on a 17"?! Sheesh, get out the magnifying glass. I do 11X8@85Hz on a 19" Sony, 12X10 just looks small unless you bump the fonts to large.
BTW- Sony HMD A400 is also "blue-silver design" and is a 18" perfectly flat screen. If I had one complaint with it. it would be the max refresh rate at 12X10X32 is 75Hz. I don't see flicker, but like everyone else, I believe "higher is better" when it comes to monitor refresh rates.
 
I'm running 1280x1024 on my 17" 1024x768 is so big on a 17". i used to run that resolution on my 15" monitor.
 
I run at 60hz also I might add, and it has never bothered me before... also, 1280x1024 is perfectly fine, you don't at all need a magnifying glass.

 
I guess it's a matter of preference Superwormy, but a 19" is as small as I'd go for 12X10 small fonts. Depends how far you are sitting from the monitor as well.
I wouldn't run at 60Hz at all- isn't 72Hz Vesa standard for "flicker free"?

It should be fine although you'll probably want to use 1280 x 960 instead, just to get the right aspect ratio. If you find it too small (I don't but some people do) you can always use 1152 x 864 instead.
 
Lets help kill 1280x1024 once and for all, 1280x960 is the proper resolution for a 4:3 monitor.

The only problem with 1280x960 on 17" is that most 17" monitors aren't really good enough(too low refresh rate, and not good enough sharpness).

But if your monitor can handle it, why not.

I think I will use the 1280x1024@85Hz on that Diamondtron Iiyama since Diamondtron must
be better than the classic dotted mask of non-trinitron/diamondron crt's. Now I have 17"
Nokia 447ZiPlus at which I run 1152x864@75Hz. The resolution of 1280x1024@60Hz isn't
usable and also everything is very very small but I think that this has to do with aperture
grille pitch which should be on the Nokia about 0.26-0.27 mm. The Iiyama Diamondtron has
the aperture grille pitch of 0.25 mm and it's DIAMONDTRON ... I think there should be the
difference.

I see the resolution usage following

14" CRT - 800x600
15" CRT - 1024x768
17" CRT - 1280x1024
19" CRT - 1600x1200

but you have to have a higher quality CRT to get the reasonable refresh rates about 85 Hz.

As a graphic card I use ATI Radeon 64 DDR so there's no problem with the refresh rates or
resolutions until 1600x1200@90Hz should work the Radeon perfect.
