128 RAM or 256?

IMHO it doesn't really seem to care. Waste of money. It's like it just can't make use of it because it's a mass market OS without the guts to do real work.
Most people (at this time) can't max out 128 megs of ram anyway. (I do on a daily basis, between my machines there are gigs of ram, but I run WinNT, 2Kpro and advanced server) I have Win 98 machines, but they are for play. Not trying to be abrupt or anything, you just get what you pay for with MS software. Rather than spend more for > 128M ram spend on a faster drive or a bigger monitor, it will make you happier.

<< Someone told me that Win98 doesn't run well with 256mb of RAM.. this true? >>

that's news to me as I use 256+Mb on my pcs without any problems!😕

Whoever told you that had no idea what he was talking about. Apparently, Win 98 cannot utilize more then 128mb of ram, so getting 256 would be a waste of money. However i don't think it's true, so i say go ahead and get the extra ram!

Well try playing Ultima Ascension this game loves 256mb rather then 128mb,yes it`s true Win98 does not have a good memory manager however gaming wise the more the better.

🙂

One would think people here (AnandTech forums) would be among the first to debunk the myth that Win98 maxes out at 128MB. Granted, it may not use more than 128MB efficiently but it does use it.

As Maximum PC demonstrated in a recent article (12/2000: Mo' Better Memory) Win98's memory utilization is also dependant on the applications involved. For example I use PhotoShop and PhotoPaint a great deal and I find additional RAM is most useful. (I currently have 384MB and use Win98SE.)

😕

If you play games or run any other apps then having 128mb of memory isn't going to cut it, you need more memory just because windows won't utilize it, doesn't mean that other apps such as games UT or Q3A or Photoshop alone will Eat up 128 megs of memory so get it and try some windows tweaks and linkage. Having 256mb(don't go higher)memory has its benefits when it is used correctly.

According to an article that appeared in PC world Win98 can use over 128MB of RAM, but it slows the OS down. The only real reason to have more that 128MB is if you are gaming or if you are going to be switching to Win2K.

Thanks guys. I look to be upgrading soon, but I will wait until one of the KT133A motherboards is available here (unless anyone has reasons why I whould wait for DDR RAM mobos) and since the memory I am using now is PC100, Hopefully I'll have enough money to get 256mb of PC133. If not, 128mb will have to do.

Guess it's a good thing I didn't pay for that new stick of 256MB, 133MHz to add to the first. Time to update the mobo and OS to utilize 512MB or 133Mhz 😉
