$125,000 Mustang is made for racing *Mandatory PIC *

Racing enthusiasts, the green flag is about to fly for a new Ford Mustang -- and it will have a six-figure price tag.

To satisfy growing public interest in motor sports, and piggyback on the popularity of its redesigned pony car, Ford Motor Co.'s racing division plans to sell 25 specially built 2005 Mustangs.

Designed exclusively for track use -- they will not be street-legal, Ford says -- the so-called FR500C is expected to become available in August at select dealerships. Sticker price: $125,000.

"They are fully engineered, ready-to-rock race cars," said Alan Hall, spokesman for Ford's Special Vehicle Team.

They will be assembled by Toronto-based Multimatic Motorsports, which is running one of a handful of FR500Cs on the Grand-Am Cup road-racing circuit. A Multimatic Mustang won last weekend's race at Mosport, Toronto's famed raceway -- the fourth win by a Mustang in six Grand-Am races this season.

Grand-Am Cup racing features cars such as the Porsche 996 and 997, BMW M3, Cadillac CTS-V and Nissan 350Z.

The FR500Cwill be powered by Ford Racing's 5.0-liter "Cammer R50" V-8 engine that will generate more than 400 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. The engine will feature the same cylinder heads found in the $140,000 Ford GT supercar.

It will tip the scales at 3,150 pounds. "That's 200 pounds lighter than the base Mustang, with 100 more horsepower," Hall said. http://www.detnews.com/2005/autosinsider/0506/29/D01-231667.htm

To me, the Ford GT would be a much better option when compared to this. It is sexier, exotic, faster, ... and only $15,000 more.

This is a gimmick for $125,000.

meh...i'm sure i could make a much faster mustang for cheaper than that...

And this is true also. The tuner market for Mustangs is amazing. Put in money for the top Saleen package and you'd get more HP than this.

The Ford GT isn't legal to race in the Grandam cup and unless your mustangs built to their specs it wouldn't be either. This is for collectors and rich people that want to go racing.

Oooh. Ok.

Still, what does the Grandam Cup require? 6, ... 8 point rollcage? I'm not really sure at all. I do know that you can do it for alot less. As for dropping weight off a Mustang, take out seats, carpet, etc. etc.

It's for rich people with more money than sense.

Well the engine is $15,000 by itself. Throw that in with the cost of the car computer to run the engine, trans, suspension, brakes, rearend, interior, cage, etc and you could do it cheaper if you built it yourself. Having somebody else build it for you though and its probably pretty close to the Ford price.

Yeah you could build a fast street car for less or get a Ford GT, but didn't anyone read the OP?...it's not meant for street use - built for racing?
I doubt anyone could build a better racing Mustang for less. This car has been even beating modified Mustang Cobra's on the Grand-AM circuit.

there are probably certain requirements vehicles must meet for the cup challenges. im sure you could build a better race car for the same $$, but it wouldnt necessarily meet the standards for cup racing

Well....i've seen 5 Ford GT's in showrooms and not ONE of them was going for under $190,000. One had an asking price of $250,000 :Q

The only 'Gimmick' is for people wanting to race. Selling 25 cars at $125k isn't going to make Ford rich and most likely won't even cover the cost (R&D) of the cars. It's mostly for the exposure to a relatively small group of racing fans of which most already know about the merits of the new mustangs. It will probably help sell some factory performance parts, but it's mostly just Ford keeping their name in people's minds. If I'm not mistaken, I think people were saying the same thing about the GT before it actually raced.

Mustangs suck these days.

The old classic ones were nice, but the current ones are downright awful. Just a terrible car.

and nothing to substantiate your claims
