Think of it as Sierra's Alien vs Predator2 game, but as a mix of first person team-play shooter with an RTS element to it. They also introduced a combat mode with this version which has turned out to be a very fun alternative to CS. Bascially, its a deathmatch vesus the aliens & marines. The more kills you get earns you better weapons/ species options. The game goes on until your hive or command chair is destroyed. So defend/repair and do the same to the enemy at the same time. The major appeal for this game is that both teams are very different. Not like your typical team-based FPS were both teams have bascially the same weapons. But despite the differences the teams, the game kills/scores end up being pretty balanced:Q.

Download NS 3.0 Beta Patch 1 ~155MB
Download NS 3.0 Beta Patch 2 ~9.3MB
Download Steam HL Installer 211MB

Install Steam
Install Patch 1
Install Patch 2

If you prefer to play on the few WON servers left, install with Steam as usual, but copy the NPS folder from (steam>steamapps>emailadress>HL) onto your Sierra>HL folder. And exectue from there instead from steam.

edit: don't even bother. too many aholes on the servers

For some reason I hesitate because of the word 'beta'. I can't really think of any reason not to download and install 3.0, especially since a lot of the servers already went 3.0, but I wish they hadn't used the word beta. Makes me feel like I'm going to have to download and install a lot of updates (later beta's) in rapid succession.

Yeah, I'm gonna hold out on it too because it requires steam to play:confused:. The previous version didn't ask for this.

I tried Steam last year with the release of Counterstrike 1.6 and hated it, but it looks like Valvle worked most of the kinks out. NS seems to load faster now than when I was playing under WON, but I heard it doesn't help the 56kers any. Steam sports a better layout and more options vs WON. Though Steam tends to update itself at will. But as long as it plays my game, that's all that matters for me.

Valve had to make Steam because Sierra didn't want to maintain WON anymore. They are just filling in the gaps.
