It could be hot for those who like specific MFG drives. For instance, I would not buy a IBM/Hitachi (I have replaced more of these than anything other drive at work, upwards of 200) drive and would consider this a hot deal for not being a IBM/Hitachi drive, it depends on the person.

Not flaming, just my $.02, sorry if it sounded that way.

<-- Another Hitachi hater, after two of my 250gb 7K250's went south in a row. No problems with the Maxtors.

Holy cow, where did I miss THAT? Serial ATA Seagates 200gb < $100? Can you point me towards that deal? I need a SATA and was all but ready to pick up the 120gb WD @ Outpost for $50AR, but I much prefer Seagate...

Cuz Samsung makes the quietest drives out there. I personally wouldnt buy it at this price, but Sammy is my HD of choice.

:disgust: Have any of you even used the Samsung drive? In the past year, I've used the following drives in various machines:

Western Digital 40gb PATA 8mb cache (WD400JB)
Seagate 40gb 7200.7 PATA 2mb cache
Seagate 120gb 7200.7 PATA 8mb cache
Western Digital 74gb Raptor
Maxtor 40gb 7200rpm PATA 2mb cache
Samsung 120gb SATA 8mb cache (the drive in this hot deal)

The Samsung is by far the quietest drive out of all of those. The Seagates are fairly quiet, but I can hear them seek, and they have a really high pitched rotation whine that only some people can pick up on...search the boards for my previous posts on this subject...I don't feel like typing it again.

Anyway, if you want silence, this is the hard drive for you. It is so quiet that I could never hear it seek. I couldn't even tell that it was on.

In fact, I'm getting another Samsung 120gb SATA drive for storage to complement my Raptor. Yes, the Raptor seeks loudly, however, it is quieter than my Seagates when idling. Therefore, I want another drive that idles quietly.

Another Samsung testimonial.

The Spinpoints as mentioned here are the quietest drives out there next to notebook drives.

I wouldn't use anything else.

Only if you get NIDEC motor. Unfortunately it seems that samsung is phasing out NIDEC motors in favor of JVC which have a very annoying whine, very much like ball-vearing WDs. So at this point I would not buy any samsung drive online because there is no way to tell which motor you'll get and chances are pretty much against it.

Me too. I only use them. I have WDs but I`m slowly phasing them out and replacing them with samsungs. It sucks though that Samsung drives are never on sale.

the latest generation seagates are one of the most hyped products ever. it is good to keep have a certain notion of a company's track record when chosing a product, but dont let it be the dominant factor. go to places like storage-review and check how it fairs against other drives. 7200.8 is mediocre in every regard, and any drive can fail regardless of the manufacturer. i am sick of seeing these 'deathstar' complaints, recent hitachi drives are just fine. seagate is far from the quietest, and it is established they tend to be slower than the most as far as the newer ones go.

oh yeah btw, i am using a samsung, segate and maxtor right now.. brand loyalty is stupid.

not brand loyal although ive used western digital mainly in the past.

seagates seem to get some good reviews, nice warranty in contrast to maxtor which i am definitely straying from purchasing.

I personally loathe TD but I did buy two of the Seagates 200GB SATA drives. The price was good and no rebates to hassle with. Rec'd both drives (two separate orders) in abour 3 business days.

Speaking of warranties, yeah Seagate offers 5 year, Hitachi k250 series are three years, etc. The absolute best warranties are.......... the ones you don't need to use. When you look at it that way, I don't think there is a great deal of difference between any of the consumer grade hard drives.

I've used what ever was the best deal for over 15 years now. I have had Seagates, WD, and Maxtor die. Maxtor was probably the best in handling returns...very fast and no hassles. WD the worst and Seagate the most time consuming. Over the last 4 or 5 years though, I haven't had a single drive fail but that is because I have been upgrading to larger capacities more than anything else as my mp3, photos and video needs devour storage.

How long has that been going on? :( I won't buy a 2nd if I can't gaurantee that it will have the same motor as the first.

I'd say at least 6 months, probably more. The only place that sells Samsungs retail is microcenter, if i'm not mistaken they had 160Gb SATA for 99.99, dunno if they still have it at this price. So if you have microcenter near you it's worth checking it out.
