So has it been verified wether the WMA8 vs WMAA means 7200 vs 5400? I was able to get one at lunch and it starts with WMA8, but I am hesitant on opening it. I tried to look up the serial online and it comes back as a WD1200ABRTL as shown on the box. So I am wondering if the serial number is acurate before I proceed to open the box. I would prefer the BB to the AB.

I noticed that my WD1000BB (7200rpm) from Best Buy has a serial# WMA8C*******. So the chances are good if you find a 120GB at CC starting with this serial# it could be 7200rpm. Looks like I'll have to go to other CC and find them. :frown:

Whoo Hoooo!!! :D Just decided to chance it and open my box a little...literally opened it enough that I saw the blue slip of paper, and it states the drive is a 7200 model. The serial starts with WMA8C2082***. The model number on the drive states that it is a 7200, assuming the BB reference is correct(WD1200BB), and the website link says that it is 5400 and so does the outside box(WD1200ABRTL). So poop on stick.

Awesome deal. There's probably not going to be any stock once I get out of work. :-(

I miss AT. I had to go back home with AOL and i can't post here with AOL. ::sniff:: glad to have a work connection I can use. Thanks for the deal.

Thanks!! I grabbed 2 WMA8's and yes they are 7200RPM! One left at my CC, all the rest were AA. At 8 gigs an hour, High Definition TV takes up way too much HD space :)

Congrat to all

My is also a 7200 RPM WMA8

Ran out and got two more
Open one of them again 7200RPM WMA8 also
The other one I might return because I dont think I can afford all of them. I have not open it yet.
NO MORE AT BREA OR INDUSTRY OR WEST COVINA, CA ~don't waste your time~

This is getting good.

BTW . . .the CC at Brea, CA has the most friendliest sales people I have ever been too.
The staff actually communicate with each other on a friendly basis. While I was paying at the register a sales woman came along with another sales man and started to talk to the sales man helping me out. They were all smile and laugh about how they all hang out and stuff. How they go bowling with thier CC shirts and people ask them if they are in a team. Then they told me about themself . . . how one is in CSUFullerton and the other graduate it and the other was like 16.

Note the saleswoman or girl is actually 22 someone on anandtech need to hit it if she is not taken. She is a cutie. Not in the hot sense but just really full of spirit and cute and a plus for all fellow techies, she seems to know a little about techs stuff.

NO I AM NOT A 40 YEAR OLD HITTING UP ON A 22. Just 25 here.

Another tibit before the girl and the guy came over to chitchat the sale guy and I talked about how great these drives would go into tivos or xboxs.

Now, this is what I call friendly customer service in my book.

Anyway if someone is looking for a geeky cute girl there is one at CC in brea, CA. Probbly taken but take your chance = P.

She works in the car stereo department, I think South of the Computer parts department :p .

Good luck somebody :D .

And tell her some fool on this place was really impressed by her. :D

I'm gonna cry....i got off work at 9 and all the CCs near here close at 9. If I don't at least get a 5400, I'll be sad.
On a brighter note, my friend got in on this and he did get a drive with WMA8 on it and it was in fact a 7200. That theory seems pretty sound.

I know I'm going against the trend here but I'm actually hoping for a WD 5400 for my ReplayTV 3060.

Anyone from Portland buy one of these?

Noise & heat. I want the upgrade to my ReplayTV to be simple, simple, simple, no fans, etc. I've heard that 5400's work best in TIVO/ReplayTV's. I know that a 7200 would work perfectly but I want something quiet and doesn't require a cooling fan.

This is the first hot deal I've used! Thanks everyone. Two of these are exactly what I wanted for my TiVO and I've been waiting for the price to come down.

I picked up one as well. WMA8 7200RPM. There were ~5 WMA8 (and ~3 WMAA)
left at the Capitola, CA store.

Thanks everyone!

I got one!! I so happy. Unfortunately, they didn't have anymore WMA8s so I had to settle for a 5400. Oh well, might be nice to use with a file servers. Thanks for the lead on this awesome deal.

are the 7200rpm drives that much louder and hotter then the 5400rpm drives? also... exactly how much faster is the 7200rpm drive, then the 5400rpm drive? i went to my CC and saw like 6 of these drives, but they were all "wmaa" serial numbers. i am thinking about going to another CC and exchange it for a "wma8" drive. is it worth the effort? the other CC is not exactly on the way home either... so it will require a bit of effort.

I picked on up today, it was a 5400, I don't really care, still a good deal, I may go back and ask tommorow if they have any wma8's otherwise, one is enough.
