120Gb Maxtor @ Staples - 2Mb Cache not hot?

Tomer

Senior member
Picked up 2 Maxtor 100+20 drives at Staples today.
Last 2 they had in the store. Both were 2Mb versions.

Anyone else find these drive at Staples with an 8Mb cache?

Even at 2Mb I think they are worth it:

(Prices rounded, small item added to reach sub-total of $150 to use coupon)

Drive #1
$140 - $30 off $150 - $30 Div. check - $40 rebate = $40

Drive #2
$140 - $30 off $150 - $40 rebate = $70 (Still not a bad deal for 120Gb)

How did you use a $30 off $150 coupon if the total before coupon is $140?

He said that he rounded the #'s and reached the $150 plateau to use the coupon...

$70 for a 120GB is a good price. but with so many deals going on lately, everyone's saturated with HDs already i presume.

Nope, I still need one 🙁. Wish there was a deal for a Seagate Cuda IV/V without a rebate... I would take a Maxtor as well.

😀

Both are model# L01J100
Both say "Whisper-quiet FDB motor"
Both also say 2Mb buffer size and 1-year warranty :|

A dividends check is a "perk" that Staples gives you when you join their Business Rewards club and buy stuff.

Link for Business Rewards Signup

They give you "Gold" status for spending at least $1,000 in 1 year, where the return % is higher, you get special coupons, and other stuff like Free online shipping.

I signed up in 1998 and am currently a Gold member. There is rumored to be a "Platinum" level, but all the CSR's I have spoken with decline to say what you have to do to qualify for that level or even what more it gives you.

I average $6,000 a year at Staples. 😀

Lately less since they have not had many good deals and coupons are 16 digit and few and far between.

I am signed up with them on 12 E-mail addresses, yet I only get coupons on one fo them.

For instance last quarter I only spent $688 with them, but my dividends check was $30. If I would have spent $5,000 it still would have been $30 as that is the limit for gold members.

I am a Platinum status rewards member. You have to spend $5,000 in a year with one account to get Platinum status. However, for some reason the more you spend, the fewer coupons you get.

makes sense, because they know/think you are gonna spend it anyway, mine as well not 'encourage' you as much.

Ok so what is the difference between Gold and Platinum? (like rewards limit, other perks, etc.)

People really need to keep this 8mb vs. 2mb stuff in perspective. In many cases, you'd never be able to tell the difference.

Yeah, the other day I was at BestBuy and the guy next to me was buying a 120Gb 8mb cache drive to upgrade his Tivo. As a good citizen, I tried to explain it didn't matter, but he, of course, knew better.

As they say, a fool and his money...

And someone tell me where 6MB of sdram costs a $20 premium...

Just got back from buying this 100+20GB drive.
Price was $129.94 + $51.74 (other stuff) -$30 (coupon) -$18.22 (customer appreciation discount) +$4.01 (tax) -$51.74 (other stuff deducted)= $85.73

$40.00 rebate (printed with my register receipt)...TOTAL... $45.73

Not bad for one trip, one store, no PM.
I'm happy.

Rebate does not show up in rebate center.
Offer ends tomorrow.

100 + 20 GB 75192028238

$129.94
less 20.00 off 100 coupon
less 13.19 Customer Appreciation 12%
add 7.50 California Sales Tax

104.25 Out of Pocket
less 40.00 Rebate

$64.25 Net

The 2MB version will have an L6Y3 code on the side of the box. The 8MB version will have a P6Y3 code on the side of the box. They will all say 2MB but if you get one with P6Y3 you will get an 8MB version. The 8MB version is the same as the Maxtor Ultra 120 which had sold at Staples for $199 until it's recent price reduction to $149. Maxtor apparently had a surplus of these drives and was putting some of them in the 100 +20 boxes. When I was shopping for this drive CompUSA and BestBuy both had plenty of the 8MB models in the 100 + 20 boxes.

it depends, they don't just strap more cache to the drive, they have to opimize the control logic to make use of it, and the extra $$$ goes to pay the engineers and development for said change. Keep in mind also Maxtor isn't as well optimized for 8MB cache as WD, the SE drives spank Maxtor 8MB drives in every benchmark and real world tests. The only real difference that can be seen is optimization of the control logic to better keep the 8mb cache full of needed data, instead of unneccisary data in the buffer(cache)

The difference is the max $100 rewards check for platinum vs. the $30 rewards check for gold vs. the $15 max for the regular card. My rewards check from the first quarter of this year was $150 platinum and $25 for the regular. I did a ton of shipping from Staples but now they have discontinued the reward from the ship center. Now it is only a copy/print center reward.

I do get less coupons for the platinum account so I just signed up for another account. The only reason I spend so much at Staples is because of the coupon/rebate stacking.
