Transfer your 60 to your 120GB, then sell the data migration kit on ebay for around $40. I only had a 20GB and sold it on ebay for around $30, but 60GBs you should be able to get $40-$60 and make a bit of a profit off upgrading to 120GB 🙂

If it's so easy to get the data migration kit, why aren't people doing what you're doing instead of buying your free kit for $$ on eBay? MS doesn't ask for proof of purchase?

Maybe other people aren't as willing to fraud MS?

The Microsoft made 120gb Xbox 360 drive is grossly overpriced. My suggestion would be to crack the old one open and put your own 120gb drive in there. It should work fine. Just google it for how-to instructions.

+1

BTW, the drive is 55 bucks on the egg right now

No it's not that easy. The 'it should work fine' means you haven't tried it, and it's an absolute bitch.

Sounds like someone is just afraid of a challenge, which seems odd this being hardware modding forum. Yes, I am aware of the formatting issues, I'm not a complete idiot. However, a quick Google search shows tons of instruction videos on how to do it properly. It may be a bitch to install it but it's a hell of a lot better than spending $160 for Microsoft's one. Doing some more research, you NEED to use Western Digital BEVS drives. $55 at Newegg.

Here's a guide that explains how to do it. You need to create a DOS boot disk as well. Here's one guide that explains it. I guess I should have been more detailed in my original post instead of just assuming people know were to find the information. 😛

If it works, you've saved $105, if it doesn't, $55 is no big loss and the drive is still useable.

I've yet to see a guide that has a way to change the serial number of the drive that the original hdd.bin is copied from. If someone has found a way to do it then I'd like to see a link.

If you were around during the original xbox modding days you'd know that MS typically waits a long long time before mass uber banning consoles (~6 months). They have good reason to since they're losing a good bit of money vs you buying a 120gb drive.

Personally I think it's BS that they charge so much, but it's not worth getting my console banned either. Looking at their history with banning modded boxes I'd have to say it's a matter of when, not if.

I have a launch xbox 1, and I've gone through the mechassult/007 gamesave hacks to the f0nts and lastly the ndure...If you would just not assume what someone does or doesn;t know you'd end up with your foot in your mouth less in all aspects of life. MS only has something to lose in banning HDD swaps. They care about money, piracy = big bucks lost...HDD swaps = small potatoes.....and people who swap in 120's or 60's do so to better utilize live. They still make their money, just not quite as much. All of the bans handed down to this point have dealt with cheating on XBL, piracy, or a combination of the two. A user upgraded HDD just doesn't fit this pattern very well, and in my opinion, I can only see about 2% chance of being banned for only an upgraded HDD. Besides, you had to buy a HDD to begin with to mod one......

Also, I'd like to add that when this is done properly there really is no way for MS to know.
Except for the unique serial number attached to the hard drive. All Microsoft has to do is gather up all the hdd.bin files online and ban the numbers they find.

Have you not looked into this at all....sure if you halfway do it and don't bother using a hex editor or anything it will show up but done correctly it will be 100% legit

If you use one of the public hddss.bin files, none of the hex editing that you do makes you undetectable. None. I think the chances that they ban people using a drive built with one of those public hddss.bin files is really small, but it can definitely happen.

Which is why you know better than to use a public hddss.bin file....there are other ways which is about as much as i can say here...wink wink nudge nudge

Unless you pull it yourself from another physical drive, you are not safe. Even if you pull it from another physical drive yourself, you can technically still be caught.

ms wants the old and new serials when ordering. You can sometimes get them to ship one with only giving the old serial if you tell them your new box is in transit.

Call Microsoft right now and tell them you just purchased the 360 Elite off of Amazon a few hours ago and want to transfer the content from your current 20GB hard drive to the new 120GB Elite hard drive. I almost 100% gurantee you will get one.

I got one for free, my roommate got one for free, my girlfriends brother got his for free and if you look anywhere on the internet you will see lots of other people getting their's for free.

Pretty much.

I guess they stopped selling the xSATA devices then? It allows me to use my Xbox360 HDD on my computer. Pretty easy to add/remove files. Maybe copy certain files needed for a swap.

You need to flash the firmware of the drive and hex edit the id key of the drive. As long as it isn't one of the mass spread keys (ie one used on 5 or less drives) it isn't going to stand out as much. It takes much more than simply copying files around.

nismo that sounds like u basically buy a drive from the store, take it's key data and return it. To be honest I'm on the fence about hacking the disk upgrade..it's right up my alley..i've hacked many things before. But, I'm still inclined to believe people about those bans...even if u return that drive, it's still a duplicate and not unique. But then again..if u register that key first...then how would MS know which is the real HD....arg.
