120 gig hard drive -- only 20 gig showing in Windows Explorer

I must not have partitioned correctly.

Just installed a 120 gig Western Digital SATA. Loaded Windows XP Pro on it -- I partitioned 10 gigs for the C drive, 10 gig for the D drive and thought that would automatically leave roughly 100 gig for the E drive.

Well, only the C and D parts are showing up. Will I have to reload Windows and partition all over again?

yeah the mistake was the E partition does not automatically create itself.. you have to create it manually. but i believe since windows is on a separate partition, you won't have to reformat or lose anything, just go back and add the E partition.

How would I create the E partition -- by booting with the Windows XP CD as I did when I first partitioned the drive?

You might be able to use Disk Management to do this. (Right click My Computer, choose Manage, then click Disk Management on the left). See if you can select the unpartitioned space and format it. I can't guarantee this will work but it's worth a try.

If not, a 3rd party program like Partition Magic can do this.

But as a last resort, the windows XP setup should allow you to format that space like you said, without actually installing windows to it.

I strongly suggest that you get ahold of a copy of partition magic. It is worlds easier to use than anything else I know of out there.

Go to disk management and just format the last 100GB of the disk. When you partitioned and formatted the other two partitions, that doesn't mean the rest was automatically formatted. Also, if you have different file systems spread across disks, then you won't be able to see the different file system(s) while using the active partition.
