12 megapixel is amazing *now with random pics!*

I decided to go buy a new camera. My old one was a 2x zoom 3.1m camera, worth 600 bucks at the time. Was won through a contest. I just went and bought a $200 sony cybershot 12.1m with 4x zoom. The battery was not charged so only played with it for a bit before I had to charge, but man, awesomeness. It can take very decent quality movies too. Like wow.

Took some random pics:

Wait for it RedSquirrel, in a minute or two you'll get people coming in telling you how crappy the pics are and should have spent like $700 and not wasted $200.

Haha probably. 😛

I was actually looking at the big professional grade cameras just for fun, but beyond my budget, and I wanted something small enough that I can throw in a coat pocket. 😛

behind the budget?
maybe beyond the budget?

Let's just say...never pick up a Hasselblad body. 😉 Especially the new 60MP one. Seriously. A 1Ds-Mark III is very impressive and I can only imagine what a nice MF body is like.

Megapixels are overrated. I can enlarge my pictures up to > 20"x12" and they look great with 8mp. No point in having amazing resolution if the lens and sensor quality can't match that resolution. Not that I'm saying that's the case with your camera (I don't know anything about that model) but I'm just saying there is way more to the quality of an image than megapixels.

I've printed a 16x24 from a 6mp shot and it came out quite well, IMHO. Image quality is important, but megapixels definitely help when it comes to cropping & printing.

I wish I was a good photographer. I have a friend who can take better pictures with a disposable camera than I can take with an expensive one. 🙁

I used to sell scientific cameras. It is true that megapixels aren't the end-all be-all of image quality. Hell, the most expensive camera I sold (~$40K) was only 512x512, and it was monochrome! 😛

The highest resolution camera we sold only had a 4MP sensor on it, but it could do 4x4 pixel-shifting obtaining a net 16MP image with full color sampling (no interpolation).

I should qualify that by adding that since I left the company they introduced a 5MP CMOS sensor, but compared to the CCDs the images sucked. awfully noisy.

The point is you can't get say a 5-8MP camera with all the modern day features and faster processing of todays cameras instead of the 5-8MP cameras of a few years ago. Sure it would be pretty dam sweet to get a fatty 5-8MP sensor in a campact camera but no one sells it, unles you get one a few years ago that was a lot slower to captures images.

I have a 5D and it's pretty dam sweet. The MP never bothered me as 12MP for me is plenty. The image quality is stunning.
